During last night’s Iron Man match at Bragging Rights, a spot where John Cena got busted open by accident caused a lot of commotion backstage.
According to Mike Johnson, an incident happened where Randy Orton hit Cena with a microphone causing Cena to start bleeding the hard way. From the backstage area, Vince McMahon ordered Cena to be cleaned up immediately after seeing the blood. WWE’s John Laurinaitis along with trainers rushed to ringside to clean him up, as WWE currently has a very strict “no blood” policy as part of their TV-PG programming initiative.
Cena wasn’t sure what was going on at first, but the cut was finally glued shut and cleaned up after the next fall.
Cena and Orton were scheduled to work among the crowd and WWE wanted to ensure there was no health issue with a bloody wrestler among fans. If it were to have happened, the issue would have been taken seriously by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission and could be used against Linda McMahon in her Senate campaign. ... Read more
Since the blood was not planned, WWE decided to stop the clock during the bout as it wasn’t known how long the clean up operation on Cena would take.
Reported by Power Slam.
Sorry if this has been posted already but I didn't see it.
Thoughts? I thought it was hardway from the monitor initially.

The other would be Cena with an open wound (not a blade job, but an actual OPEN WOUND) gushing for close to 50 minutes.
That could have gotten bad. They absolutely made the right call.

If it was for a planned "fight in the crowd", I can understand it. However, if it was to "protect the image", then it's just being overly cautious and silly.

Did Cena actually attempt a blading spot without permission? Curious.

I would be concerned with Cena bleeding from an open wound for so long above all else. Blade jobs are clean and for the most part controlled. This was a gash, and there was still a TON of time left. I'd guess they'd have cleaned him up even in the TV-14 era.

Even if Cena wasn't gushing-gushing (think 8.0+ on the Muta Scale), an Iron Man match will keep the heart rate up for a long time, which will keep the blood flowing faster, which will keep it pouring out faster. Also, stopping the wrestling match to clean up the blood adds a sense of verisimilitude to the show.

From the sounds of how things went, this was the right thing to do. It would have been a serious health hazard for Cena if the match had continued. Being actually busted open is much worse than a blade job.

Smackdown: Punk hits Hardy with microphone, Hardy begins to bleed.
HIAC: Cena drops balde, referee picks it up, nobody bleeds.
Bragging Rights: Orton hits Cena with microphone, Cena just happens to bleed.
Kinda reminds me of Bret and Flair at WM8.

Those microphone aren't made of soft gentle plushiness, just to let you know. I have gotten hit by a mic (accidentally, but I was still was hit by it), and it hurts. Why do you think some of them have them soft-coverings? It's metal under that.

Yeah, I'm sure you can spin it into an image thing no problem - but in general it's the right move to make for John's safety. We're not talking a normal ten minute match here; if he wasn't cleaned up he literally would have had to wrestle and pull off several spots with blood gushing out of his head for another fifty minutes, and that's just not on.
So yeah, the right call I'd say.

Vince is becoming Vintage McMahon, I personally can't wait until he starts coming out when something happens in a match

Did they really need the crowd spot? They could've just had them run through the backstage area if they needed to change it on the fly.

I thought this would be about some legend where if you say "Bloody Cena" into a mirror 5 times, he'll show up behind you to overcome the odds.

Well regardless of whether you agree with the policy or not, they have a no blood policy to begin with. So knowing that. Knowing that Cena was busted open hardway, and not by a clean job, and knowing that he had to wrestle 50 more minutes with this gash...it was most likely a much easier decision to clean up the gash and stop the bleeding rather than change the booking. Also, stopping the bleeding adds some realism to the match. As ridiculous as Cena's comebacks are sometimes how much worse would it be if he went through his superman comeback while gushing blood for 40 minutes?

I didn't see the match, but I actually like the sound of the stopping the match thing. Gives it a legit competiton vibe.

Yes, I've been waiting for a Regal style post. I wonder how many people read the title in his accent.
