1. Kate Winslet is HARDLY plus sized, she is more in line with "average," but that is personal opinion. 2. I don't think the Oscars ALWAYS go to the best in their appreciative categories, and I think that while Titanic was a call back to the ol' days with the big sweeping melodramas, it was not deserving of the accolades it got. Certainly, overall, a good movie, well acted and technically sound. Consensus is not a fact based exercise. 1. I was going by Hollywood standars, in which case she IS considered to be "plus sized". I'm a guy who likes girls like Kerry Marie, and Nadine Jansen, next to whom Kate looks like a rail. So I see what you're saying, but for my purposes, she IS on the bigger end of the scale here. "Average" in Hollywood is Nicole Kidman, Kate Bosworth, and Reese Witherspoon. 2. Yeah, I get that, and I agree that the best film doesn't always win...but in TITANIC's case...I think it did. Personally, the only other nominated film I would have gone with over TITANIC would have been LA CONFIDENTIAL. Shows my tastes, huh? L.A. confidential was a better movie, and as has been state Titanic got it's epic "sweep" with what amounted to poor pacing. If a half-hour had been trimmed it might have been better. Though I felt the script was weak, and I still don't think Cameron was the BEST one to direct a melodrama like Titanic.

You know what? To run millions over budget and behind schedule, in addition to almost drowning Kate Winslet, to deliver a (IMO) so-so film and still have it break box office records? James Cameron has to be the luckiest man alive.

Its a brilliant technical achievement, but that's about it. The dialogue is ridiculous. I agree with this. The look is fantastic, but the dialogue is really ludicrous at times. I had to leave the cinema the first time I saw it, because I ended up cracking up half the time.

For some reason i really like Titanic. Its always a nice film to relax to and just wind away.Billy Zane was the star of the film by far, surprised he didnt get on to bigger things afterwards though.

Also, I must mention how glad it makes me to see people appreciating a plus sized actress like Winslet, instead of making cracks about how she's "teh FATTTZORZZZZ!". I will always and forever think the BRIDGETT JONES people made a horrid mistake not casting Kate as Bridgett. I love that Winslet herself took a stand on the issue by suing a magazine (I forget which one) for airbrushing the photos of her to make her look thinner.

I hated the movie, though it was partially due to the setting. Yes, the movie was shot well, but God it bored me to tears. The anger came from sitting in the theater and listening to "Leo fangirls" gushing while wondering out loud how the movie would end. It took everything I had not to throw things when they were audibly shocked that the boat hit the iceberg.

I loved titanic, I took this girl to see it when I was young and un-kissed, all that changed during the movie.. well the never been kissed part anyway, i was still fairly young.
I still want to see Titanic 2: Jack is back though.

The iceberg didn't a nomination for "Best Supporting Actor".
That's why I hate it.
Well, actually, the reason why I resent the movie is that you take an example of human fallability (as in, the "unsinkable ship" sank) and you turn it into just another love story featuring then-heartthrob Leonardo DiCaprio. I'm not saying the entire movie should've focused on the err of the Titanic, but it didn't help that most of the movie focused on two people wanting to get freaky in a car that was in the storage area of the ship. The movie was long, plodded, and overstretched, with the intent of it purely being a soap opera with the added benefit of giving those two worked on it some hardware (it won pretty much every Oscar that it was nominated for).

I hate the phrase "Am I the only person"...? It seems like it's used as an arbitrary way to seem "cool" or "different". Liking the all time highest grossing movie (or any movie) does not make you "cool" or "different".

I watched it on VHS when I was in high school. It was a 2-tape deal. The 2nd tape was the only part I liked - it was just after the iceberg hit.
My favorite memory of the movie was when Leo lets go and sinks into the ocean and this girl who was watching it with us starts singing "Under The Sea."
We had been doing our own MST3K the whole time except for this couple who got mad each time. "COME ON you GUYS!!"
We spent a good majority of the movie rooting for Billy Zane too. To this day - I can't take Leo seriously in anything he does.
I mean, that accent Blood Diamond makes Nic Cage in Con Air look like Al Pacino in Scarface.

It didn't wow me, but it was far from the black hole of suck people claimed it was. A lot of it's unintentionally funny, especially as the ship's sinking. Dicaprio went on to better things. One of the most unintentionally funny moments to this day HAS to be when that guy jumps off the back of the ship and hits his legs on a propeller and just continuously flips the rest of the way down until he belly flops into the water below. I rewound that moment so much. Can't say I care much for this film other than this

Any time I see, online or elsewhere, the movie mentioned I hear nothing but people who dislike it and make fun of it. Also, any time a list of bad/over rated/ etc movies are listed it was included. It's just a simple question that was risen out of curiosity...am I the only one that liked it? It had nothing to do with being cool or not cool. You read way much into it.

It has 7.3 out of 10 on IMDB-it must have fans. Don't get me wrong, disliking popular things just because they are "trendy" is lame too, but the "Am I the only person..." excuse tends to be a verbal catchall that gets overused on the Internet.

While I don't think its a terrible movie, I HATE the fact that it is STILL the highest grossing movie!

I've never actually sat through the entire thing.
I remember I had a chance to back in 1998 when some family friends had rented it and we were going to watch it on a lazy summer evening, but I ended up going off and watching a scrambled feed of SummerSlam '98 on another TV, instead.

It came out the same weekend as Mouse Hunt with Nathan Lane and Lee Evans. I chose to see Mouse Hunt and haven't regretted that decision.
All the girls in school were going on and on about "Leo" being "dreamy" and I wanted to "barf into their gym shoes". I think he might've turned a few guys gay too, not that there's anything wrong with that. But Leonardo DiCaprio? Stop it.
I held out til it came on HBO because everyone I knew saw it in the theater about 17 times a piece. After I sat through all 45 hours of it, I said out loud, "THAT is the highest grossing movie of ALL TIME???!! HOWWWWW???!!"
Most overrated, overhyped boring piece of crap I've ever seen in my life.
