They're saying that Avatar has been nicknamed "Dancing with Smurfs", and could well be the biggest box office flop of all time.

I think the hype for this movie is out of control. What say you, Paul Giamatti? AAH! NOT PAUL GIAMATTI!!!

Why should any gamer pay attention to a movie tie in game? You can count the number of good ones on two hands, and most of those were released well after the movie.

I think the hype for this movie is out of control. Yes it is, and this is coming from someone who wants to see it. It's the return of James Cameron to sci-fi/action. But the hype is getting ridiculous. Hell, last night's episode of Bones dedicated about a third of the episode to hyping this movie. That's not an exaggeration, a third was dedicated to Sweets, Hodgins and Fisher wanting to see the movie, and even camping out for it.

So a movie tie-in game released 3 weeks before the movie isn't selling well because, like 99% of movie games it's just mediocre? Is that really a surprise?

I have at this point accepted that there are so many people that want this movie to fail that it will get a bad rap no matter what. I will still be seeing it regardless.

I will probably end up seeing it. Just for the 3D gimmick.
And because it's James Cameron. But he has been out of the game for like 11 years and his last film Titanic was the Twilight of it's day.
So I'm hoping he can still do action and sci fi movies like the excellent first two Terminator movies and Aliens.

No, but the Avatar game was hyped as a "revolution in game design" in several previews. Its more disappointing than anything else. Then blame the previews, not the property. Previewers are notoriously horrible at buying whatever the developers tell them and show them, even if it's only 2 minutes of gameplay. I don't see how the movie won't do well. There's nothing in the theaters to challenge it. Twilight will have already run it's course with the Twihards. Up in the Air isn't a big money-maker type film. Same with Everybody's Fine and Invictus. The only big movie coming out is The Princess and the Frog, which is aimed at a totally different audience. Unless Avitar is a complete and utter pile of cowpie, which I can't see it being, people will see it and it will make a decent amount of money. Now, probably not it's reported $500M budget, at least not until DVD/Bluray, but it will make enough money to prevent it from being called a flop.

I agree with this, EMB, but sadly, there are going to be those here (and everywhere else) who will engage in great schadenfreude when this movie does NOT break eleventy billion dollars in it's first forty-eight hours of release, crowing about what a flop it is, and how terrible it is, and claiming that they were right in predicting it to be a flop.

Their was all this HUGE hype leading up to the debut of the trailer. Once I saw the trailer, I went "Really? REALLY!?" Why are people getting so up in arms about this movie? I was disappointed that it wasn't about "The Last Airbender," an Avatar movie that stands a chance to get my money.

This movie reminds me of Kurt Russell's Soldier for some reason.

How many good video games based off movies are there anyway? I mean honestly unless its some freaky fluke like Goldeneye 64 or that Riddick game, most video games tend to be licensed out as another marketing front for the movie. Game quality is irrelevent. Not saying Avatar will be good or anything, but the Internet chatter on that whole issue has been real annoying.
