I hadn't heard word one about this movie until I saw the trailer for it before Inglorious Basterds. The trailer was...not very good. Everyone seemed to give off a "What the hell was THAT all about?" vibe afterward.
But I don't get why there are those who are hyping it or hating on it, either way. It hasn't come out yet, so, personally speaking, I have no friggin' idea if it's any good or not.
I can safely say, though, that I've heard almost no hype whatsoever for this movie, at least where I live/work/interact/go out/etc. Maybe it'll get some if it gets good reviews.

There is one thought that comes to mind, really.
For Cameron's dream project, why did this dream involve the robot programmer guy from Grandma's Boy?

I pretty much feel the same way. I want to see it, but I'll wait to see if it will be in the theater or DVD. And I haven't really heard any "Greatest movie EVAH" hype from anyone I've talked to. Most people have just seemed to be like "yeah that looks pretty good" but aren't super excited.

I have no desire at all to see this movie because it looks pretty bad to me. However,I'm not going to wish for it to fail. If people want to see it and it makes money, good for it. I don't see the point in wishing a movie to fail. If you think it looks bad, just don't watch it. That's what I'm going to do. No reason to wish doom upon it.

No, but the Avatar game was hyped as a "revolution in game design" in several previews. Its more disappointing than anything else. Then blame the previews, not the property. Previewers are notoriously horrible at buying whatever the developers tell them and show them, even if it's only 2 minutes of gameplay. I don't see how the movie won't do well. There's nothing in the theaters to challenge it. Twilight will have already run it's course with the Twihards. Up in the Air isn't a big money-maker type film. Same with Everybody's Fine and Invictus. The only big movie coming out is The Princess and the Frog, which is aimed at a totally different audience. Unless Avitar is a complete and utter pile of cowpie, which I can't see it being, people will see it and it will make a decent amount of money. Now, probably not it's reported $500M budget, at least not until DVD/Bluray, but it will make enough money to prevent it from being called a flop. Um...Sherlock Holmes? Alvin and the Chipmunks 2? (neither is really the same thing, but...yeah). I don't want this movie to flop. But having a tie-in-game that was hyped as a major advancement in technology be mediocre won't help its cause.

Actually, those previews were just quoting James Cameron HIMSELF. Remember, this is the guy that spent FIFTEEN MINUTES talking about this game at Ubisoft's E3 press conference this year. And he didn't even show any screenshots or gameplay. He just TALKED with the movie's/game's title logo on a black background showing behind him.

I'm not actively hoping the movie flops, I'm just calling it as I see it and Avatar looks like the new Battlefield Earth. Look at the facts:
*The movie cost $500 million to make. That's a lot of scratch to make up for and that's asking quite a bit considering the down economy.
*The preview has gotten really bad reactions, unless laughing hysterically is what you're going for.
*Cameron has been out of the game for 11 years. Things in cinema have changed since then. What's the likelihood that Cameron has kept up, much less be ahead of the curve?
*Titanic, like it or not, was a fluke. Yeah, it made a lot of money but it was most certainly a right place/right time type picture. What are the odds of this happening twice in a row, especially after a decade plus off?
*Here's the big one and a lot of you won't like it but here's the scoop. The blue things are borderline furry porn. A lot of people are going to be turned off by this.
I don't give two hoots if the flick lays an egg or it makes enough money to end the recession, in my opinion it looks atrocious. Gut reaction, it's going to eat a bag.

So a movie tie-in game released 3 weeks before the movie isn't selling well because, like 99% of movie games it's just mediocre? Is that really a surprise? No, but the Avatar game was hyped as a "revolution in game design" in several previews. Its more disappointing than anything else. They said the same thing about the King Kong videogame. I dunno, there's just something strange about the movie, like it's got such an uphill climb because it has no established mythos or fanbase to work off of, and it doesn't really know it's identity. Is it an animated movie? Is it Live action with an unprecedented amount of CG, like the Star Wars Prequels? I'm willing to give it a try, since it looks pretty damn cool. We'll see how it goes.

I knew this game would flop, I mean c'mon. This isn't like Enter The Matrix or (insert children's film title here), this is Avatar. The core audience is playing Left 4 Dead 2, Modern Warfare 2, etc. Why would they invest $60 on a game based off a movie they haven't seen?
Also, my gf and I have a bet going. I think Avatar will be a flop, while she thinks it will clean up. NOTHING I have seen so far tells me this movie will make $500 million worldwide.

I wouldn't say it looks bad it just looks like nothing special to be honest. It just has nothing that grabs my attention apart from the fact James Cameron directed it, which lets face it, is the only reason some people will see it.

Avatar does come out before those movies, so it won't have to contend with them until its second weekend.

They said the same things about Titanic before it opened as well.
Cameron has never really had a failure (not counting Piranha 2, or course), I doubt this will be a flop either.

From the preview on NFL, I think this movie will make decent cash worldwide, if not be a huge hit in the US.
As for the game, I don't buy that a game can really hurt a movie all that much. I mean, there's still far more bad games made off good movies than there are bad movies based on good games.

Don't discount the foreign market, folks outside the US are really high on big CGi FX driven movies like this.
It could be another 2012 which has made an ok 140m statewide but a massive 450m foreign, or another Ice Age 3 which did about 200m statewide and a gigantic 680m foreign.
Either way I guess we'll see if "Master Chief Dances with Smurfs in Furngully" will be huge or not in another 2 weeks.

I think it will flop in the sense that it won't come close to making up the $750 million budget (including advertising). It doesn't strike me as an absolute must-see, but I don't think it will be horrible.
I have a bet going with one of my friends on Avatar's second weekend vs. Princess and the Frog's third. She's got Avatar.

Like I said, I love and respect Cameron but I want this movie to bomb because it would hurt FOX, and to see the Cameron fanboys cry in horror after months of saying "This movie will be teh greatest evar!1!".
