Like I said, I love and respect Cameron but I want this movie to bomb because it would hurt FOX, and to see the Cameron fanboys cry in horror after months of saying "This movie will be teh greatest evar!1!". Like I said, schadenfreude.

Just ask any fan of X-Men, Fantastic Four, Hitman, Dragonball Z, and Street Fighter, FOX (or more appropriately Tom Rothman) needs a reality check for all the fans they have pissed off. It's just unfortunate that the check is Cameron's supposed $500 million project.

Also, you do realize that Fox doesn't actually have $500 million invested in this movie. I don't remember where I saw the article (Variety maybe?), but they talked about Avitar's budget and how studios now spread the risk out by involving multiple investors and such. So I guarantee that Fox won't be sunk by this unless it fails to even make $20 Million, which is virtually impossible.

I saw a 3D ad for it before 3D Christmas Carol, which was really good, and it looked cool

He'll just shift the blame towards Cameron. I'd rather see the movie succeed, but at the north end of a Billion dollar budget, it's going to be tough to make up that money in this economy $13 at a time.

I hadn't heard word one about this movie until I saw the trailer for it before Inglorious Basterds. The trailer was...not very good. Everyone seemed to give off a "What the hell was THAT all about?" vibe afterward. But I don't get why there are those who are hyping it or hating on it, either way. It hasn't come out yet, so, personally speaking, I have no friggin' idea if it's any good or not. I can safely say, though, that I've heard almost no hype whatsoever for this movie, at least where I live/work/interact/go out/etc. Maybe it'll get some if it gets good reviews. I'm just gonna copy what you said because I feel the exact same way. I've heard hype and such but considering I don't watch much TV, I haven't seen many ads. And I'm pretty good at filtering out internet hype as well. But when I saw the trailer before Inglorious Basterds, I was all "Huh?" Actually, I was more freaked out than anything because those blue things are creepy as hell.

But then again....WATCHMEN and Fox's history/involvement with it is a long story.

The movie really reminds me of Ferngully: The Last Rainforest.
Someone sent in to help "clean out" a rainforest like environment so that their elements can be used. This person becomes one of the locals and grows to enjoy their culture and falls in love. So, when it comes time for those they originially worked for to destroy, they fight with the locals instead.
Am I reaching?

Am I reaching? Nah. But you gotta remember tropes are not bad. So far my only problem with the movie is the mecha design. But then again I'm not the biggest fan of Western Mecha design in the first place.

It's definately not looking too promising but I know I'll end up seeing it in the cinema. My boyfriend is looking foward to seeing it and I'll go with him and then he'll be forced to watch Sound of Music with me.

I don't want to pass judgement until the film is out.
But if it does bomb James Cameron can kiss goodbye that 'Battle Angel Alita' movie we wants to make after this film.

Well movie tie-in games seem to get short shrift anyway so it's not surprising the game is getting average scores. Though it may be pretty bad anyway but I haven't played it.
Honestly though, at least to me and people I know, the amount of CGI in this movie is really off putting and it almost looks like an animated movie, which if you're not in to animation, can put people completely off the movie.
Also the trailers seem to indicate an analogy for war on terror/invasion on indigenous people and almost a bare bones copy of Dances with Wolves. The young guy goes in to a strange land as an enemy, learns the secret way and decides to fall in love with their culture.
May be I'm being cynical but this movie (and I've pretty much liked all of Cameron's movies) seems incredibly meh, and for a budget of 500 million? Man I ragged on Transformers 2 for being a waste of money but this might be even worse if they can't get any of that money back.

Even if it makes a billion dollars for everyone, it's still not even going to be the best sci-fi epic of the year.

^I'd like to agree as well. There's only so many times studios can completely disregard established characters and their fans (X Men series) before you lose all faith to make anything remotely related to the series you originally liked. It's not so much you want them to fail and lose their jobs, just that it legitimately hurts to see a series you love destroyed.

Unfortunately you may be right, nothing is sacred to Rothman as he even screwed with Ridley Scott despite the money Scott made for FOX before. Hopefully it won't happen though, Tom did catch alot of flack after FOX's disastrous 2008 year where only one of their movies (besides Horton Here's a Who) grossed over 100 million and that was "What Happens in Vegas" We will have to see. Maybe Chipmunks 2 and Avatar will eat each other at the box office jk.
