I have a question for those who have good knowledge of the lower divisions:
Has any team ever been promoted to a higher division when they have no manager during the course of the entire season? I know Newcastle United are in a blip at the moment, and there are rumours Chris Hughton will be made manager next week, but nevertheless, it's just an interesting question in general.
Any ideas?

On a broader note, has any team ever had no manager during the course of an entire season? What makes you think that Newcastle are going up by the way?

Gillingham got promoted via the play-offs in 99/00 without our manager (Peter Taylor), being under contract in any way, shape or form if that counts.

Proof why this season is better than last season - last year, Frank Lampard and Robin van Persie were tied for the Premier League lead with 10 assists. This season, only two months in, Cesc Fabregas already has 9 assists.

Yep, Gillingham counts then. Interesting.
And Red Lion, after the last 4 games (2 points from a possible 12), and what's going on right now at SJP, as well as all the behind the scenes messups, believe me, I am under no delusions that it's gonna be easy to go up. I hope we do obviously, but it is by NO MEANS a foregone conclusion.
Just wondered if it had ever happened before. As Gillingham have done it, that does give me some hope.
You do raise a fair point though - we've now gone over a year without a manager, all the people in charge after Keegan weren't permanent, so we've been without a manager since September 4, 2008. Can this unwanted record be beaten?

Anyone who wants a good laugh, watch the football league show tonight. John Nutter's OG was a sight to behold. Still, at least Simeon Jackson managed to put another 100k on his transfer fee by equalising.

Melbourne Victory 3 (Dugandzic 18' 56', Leijer 89') - Adelaide United 1 (Hughes 64')
North Queensland Fury 2 (Fowler 65', Daal 71') - Perth Glory 1 (Sikora 25')
Wellington Phoenix 6 (Daniel 28' 53', Brown 48', Greenacre 54', Ifill 59', Hearfield 82') - Gold Coast United 0
I'm not kidding about that last one. Bottom-placed Wellington just destroyed top-placed Gold Coast. Unbelievable.
EDIT:
Sydney FC 2 (Brosque 55', Kisel 69') - Brisbane Roar 1 (Cernak 72')

We totally annihilated Leeds, them losing only 2-1 was very flattering on them. Once again, we end a top of the league team's unbeaten run, surely the Footballing story of the week, because everything else this week so far has been so generic.

Bad day. Bad, bad day.
Started so brightly, bit of magic from Robbie Blake gave Fletcher an easy finish. 1-0 up within 5 minutes.
Then a freak injury to Brian Jensen at the worst possible moment leaves an empty net for the equaliser. Jensen hobbles off, Penny steps in, the team falls apart. A handful of decent chances but none are taken. 2nd half Wigan get 1 opening and score from it, then play us off the park. Nugent livened things up a little but it was too late, Wigan got another from bad defending, and we were embarassed.
Caldwell was awful. Carlisle wasn't much better- I don't get how he played so well against United and Everton but has goen so off the boil lately. I'd consider dropping Bikey back into defence and sticking Caldwell on the bench, or drop Caldwell for David Edgar- but as Caldwell's the captian that'll never happen.
I also really don't get the hard-on most Burnley fans have for Kevin McDonald. Seriously, there's dozens of fans insisting he's the saviour to our prayers. Plenty are also insisting Alexander was crap yesterday when I thought he was solid. McDonald's done nothing at all in the sub appearances he's had to impress me, yet so many people think he will instantly make the team perfect. But by the same token, plenty of fans who insisted playing Bikey in midfield would make us formidable are now claiming it's a farce that he's played out of position and should be in defence.
Burnley fans are never happy and very intolerant, it would appear. 2 bad games in a row, a few falterings away from home, but we're still clear of the relegation zone- yet plenty of fans view certain players- typically Jordan, Alexander and Eagles as well as Blake, Carlisle & Caldwell sometimes- as completely inept.

Oh, did forget 1 thing though- there was more than a bit of rubber legs syndrome from Wigan in the game. Eagles was far too easily knocked off the ball for us today (yet I still htink he looked among our better playerrs) But some of Wigan's theatrics were absurd.
2nd half when we're 2-1 down, Nugent's just come on and the tide is shifting. Alexander jostles for the ball with Thomas and kicks the ball out, it bounces off Thomas' face not particularly hard, and down goes Thomas holding his head and not moving......for around 3 minutes. A stretcher comes on and carries him off the pitch. For being hit in the face with a football. Soon as he's off the pitch and our attack's been disrupted, off come the straps, up he jumps from the stretcher back onto the pitch right as bloody rain. Disgraceful but it did its job in completely destroying our built momentum.
I'm not saying that's why we lost- we lost cause we weren't as good as we have been in games this season- but antics like that certainly did disrupt our flow at points.

Oh yeah! A well deserved win for Liverpool today. They were the better team and we did it without Gerrard. I'm not getting carried away or saying we're back on course for the league title but it's always nice to beat your biggest rivals. Especially when you're having your worst run of results for 2 decades.

Decent derby game, Carragher was lucky to stay on the pitch after that challenge on Owen, I think he may have hand balled it during the build up to Liverpool's 2nd goal too but may be wrong as I haven't seen the replay.
It's ridiculous the next game has been put back to 4:15 just so Sky can chat about the Liverpool game (unless it's been delayed for another reason).

I think Carragher stayed on because Owen was not heading towards the goal. That's how the commentator's here saw it anyway.
