Reading up on Stanley Kubrick I read about how The Beatles wanted to make an adaptation of "Lord of the Rings" with Kubrick but Stan thought it would be too difficult to adapt. I can't even imagine what it would've been like considering Kubrick's style of film making combined with the Beatles creativity.
Any other stories like this?

2 of my favorites.
What if they had gone with the originial idea for Stripes "Cheech & Chong join the army"?
What if they had actually made Bad Boys starring Jon Lovitz & Dana Carvey as it was originally pitched to the studio?

What if Christopher Walken beat out Harrison Ford for the part of Han Solo in Star Wars? Or if Toshiro Mifune had played Obi Wan Kenobi? Or if Orson Welles would have provided the voice for Darth Vader? These were all possibilities ...
Although I have to admit, Christopher Walken as Han Solo, imagine the greatness ...

Sylvester Stallone lobbied hard to get the part of the bad guy in Squirm; when he didn't get it, he focused instead on selling his script for Rocky the same year, which got made. But what if he had gotten the role?

What if Friday the 13th Part 8 Jason Takes Manhattan really does take place in Manhattan?
They were supposed to film it with most of New York's famous areas such as MSG, Central Park The Empire State Building etc. But the studio's budget didn't allow them.

What if George Lucas could've gotten the license to Flash Gordon. Not being able to get it lead into Star Wars. Then after Star Wars caught on, Flash Gordon pretty much road on its coattails. I enjoyed Flash Gordon and it's campy nature and still cherish my 1998 DVD copy, and I couldn't really imagine a world without Star Wars, but I always wondered if Lucas's Flash Gordon would've been as big as Star Wars.

One of the really fun ones: What if the shark had actually WORKED for Steven Speilberg back in the summer of '75?
What kind of a movie would JAWS have been?

What if Stallone had given into Irwin Winkler and Robert Chartoff and allowed Rocky to be made staring either Robert Redford, or James Caan?
Another one that is more of a hypothetical, what if George Lucas had the technology available today when he was making the original trilogy? My guess is that Star Wars would have never been the hit it became. I also think that there is a good chance that Han Solo would have remained a green alien since Lucas could just CGI him the whole movie.

What if any one of the other candidates for playing Neo in The Matrix had been cast? These included: Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio, Val Kilmer, Tom Cruise, Will Smith, and Nicholas Cage.
What if Billy Dee Williams had been kept in the role of Harvey Dent to play Two-Face in a later Batman movie?
What if James Cameron had gone with the original idea for The Terminator: the Terminator being a small, frail-looking unassuming guy (which was revisited with the T-1000 in T2), while Arnold played Kyle Reese?
What if O.J. Simpson had been cast as the Terminator? (seriously, he was considered for it, but turned down because he had too much of a "nice guy" appearance that people wouldn't buy as a cold-blooded killer. I can't make this up)
