Tonight was just a segment on a scripted show. I don't think it proves anything either way.

I don't think you can fake an awkward truce like Bret and HBK had tonight, Montreal was not a work.

Montreal was not a work. How can you say so when the reactions of both Bret and Shawn were of anger?

I still say it was a work and nothing that happened during Raw changed that. The only flaw in my argument is HBK hasn't tried to blow Bret's cover and call him out on this. Brett will never admit that is was a work that he was in on voluntarily because (in my opinion) he would have to admit to working his fellow wrestlers.
Don't forget that on some level, these guys are actors so faking an akward truce shouldn't be beyond their abilities, especially since there was so much real animosity between them. HBK's anger when the screwjob took place was acting (as he knew what would happen before it did) so it stands to reason that Bret was acting also if you believe as I do.
The truth is, we'll never know for certain what exactly went down.

I'm pretty sure that everything's been called a work by the IWC at some point or another. But yes, it is safe to say that Montreal never was.

Nah... I think there's genuine animosity between Bret and Shawn for a lot of things that have absolutely nothing to do with Montreal. So when it comes to legitimate awkwardness in the reconciliation, and legitimate dislike, neither of those things require Montreal to have been real. Montreal (as the story goes) was partially an outcome of their hatred for each other, but it was hardly the reason for it.
I'm still on the fence.

I never thought it was. You can tell when someone REALLY doesn't like someone. Some people hide it well, others don't. The three men invovled in the middle of this DON'T. Even though I thought the handshake and back pat was nice, it looked like an aging lion patting an aging jaguar on the back with its claws drawn. Nice but awkward.

Promotor Fidei:
Vince said that his main goal was to get the belt off of Bret not to put it on Shawn. There are thousands of ways he could've done it with half the craziness. Why'd he pick the one way that would clearly bring the most drama, and let him say what became the biggest catchphrase of his life ("Bret Screwed Bret")? Because Vince plays chess, and he knows that controversy sells.
God's Advocate:
But WWF and WCW were going at it. Vince wasn't retarded, so why would he intentionally send his biggest star to his biggest competition with the biggest controversy following him? Unless he's psychic and knew WCW wasn't going to use Bret properly...
...the point is, if Montreal was a work, it would've been a gamble that McMahon, as a businessman, should've known better than to take.

Yeah, and now we can put Montreal behind us and leave it in its tomb, only to be taken out to prove some sort of point to someone.

I can see why peopel called it a work, but come on. Why in God's name would they run a work for 12 years? Why would they let one of their few big stars go to another company? Too much of it makes no sense.

Hasn't Meltzer apparently said that we'll find out what really happened once someone "close" to the events that night passes away?

Too much of it makes no sense. But the same can be said on the flip side as well. How was A&E able to get so much important footage? They seemed to have been in the right place at the right time for every important phone call, conversation, etc. that he, his wife, and other participants had leading up to, including, and even after the screw job. Whenever someone left the WWE for WCW, their importance to the company was downplayed on their way out (usually, in the form of being buried to some degree or another). Yet in this case, Vince did something that was guaranteed to draw tons of attention to Bret and how WCW would handle him and the Montreal incident. Why would Vince do something that had the potential to generate so much attention for their competitor? Why weren't lawsuits filed? Vince might have been able to get Bret for assault, but Bret had a "reasonable creative control" clause in his contract and there were still weeks before the contract expired. Bret could have potentially won a breach-of-contract lawsuit that would have easily trumped any assault charges that Vince could have filed. He *might* have also been able to get defamation of character based on the skits that they did with the midget later on. Why have so many members of the family been so willing to work with Vince since the incident? I understand people like Owen still had contractual obligations to fulfill, but why the hell would the ones that signed up later (up to and including ones like Nattie and DH) be so willing to work for someone who already (repeatedly) screwed their family? What we saw on TV last night proved nothing one way or the other. If it was real, any issues between Bret, Shawn, Hunter, and Vince are being (or have been) handled behind the scenes. Plus, Bret and Shawn (apparently) hated each other for years before Montreal, yet were always still able to put on great matches and work well togther. Why would last night be any different? Why would Bret even want to come back? I'm not saying he'd need to dwell on Montreal until he dies, but at the same time, I wouldn't want to go back to work for a guy who screwed me so hard the first time around. I've heard reports that Bret is "bored", which is understandable. But why not work with TNA or ROH? Or Stampede (is that still in business)?

I've always been on the fence but dangling towards the it's a work side. There's to many things pointing to both sides.
It's a work side: The convenient timing of the wrestling with shadows film crew, The fact that Vince allowed them to release the footage of his locker rooms and talent. Why Bret wore a wire in the first meeting with vince but not the the aftermath even though that's what everyone would want to hear. The episode of Raw that Bret is watching in wrestling with shadows where DX brings out a midget Bret. There is no water mark in the corner of the screen so leads you to think it's a master copy. How would a guy who was just booted out of the company get a master copy?
I know I'm stretching but there's a part of me that wants to believe it's a work.

Stu sold it to Vince a very, very long time ago. You do make a good argument though. However, I still maintain it was legit, right up there with Backlund losing the title in '83.
