If Shawn had retired at Wrestlemania 14, we wouldn't be having this conversation seriously. Thank god he came back and showed us some of the best years of his life.

Undertaker, Jericho, HBK, Kurt Angle, and Edge. In no particular order, other than HBK and Taker tied for 1st.

Considering promos, in ring work, elevating opponents, and connecting with the crowd as face or heel, Shawn Michaels is the best all around performer I have ever seen.

In my opinion, he is the greatest wrestler of all time. When i started watching WWE on a full time basis in May 2002, and I saw his match with HHH at Summerslam 2002 i was an absolute awe of what i had just seen and become an instant HBK fan.
Id say he was the best because whoever he faced he always had a good match it seemed, and the guys that faced him always looked better imo than they had done before.

No.
Hbk is one of the very best but it will always be Hulk Hogan who is known as the greatest.

I agree that if HBK never came back after WM14, then we would not be having this conversation. Granted, he did far more for us in the last 8 years than I ever imagined he could. That being, said, he's still not the greatest of all time. Believe or not, I honestly believe the greatest superstar in the history of WWE is The Undertaker.
Also, Undertaker is not my favorite, Bret Hart actually is but I'd say the Taker has contributed much more overall to the product than any other wrestler in the past 20 years or ever.

HBK the greatest? Well to me "greatest" does not exist cause it means "will be destroyed soon". But would I say HBK will be remembered when my great great great grand kid drinks himself to death ? Oh hell yeah!

No but he's near the top, also he was great and the his 96 title might be considered disastrous from a buyrate and storyline point of view, but his title defenses were gold, watch the Good Friends Better Enemies match with Diesel, heck the Vader match at Summerslam and especially the Mind Games match with Mankind. With that in mind, I find it weird that no matter how hard I tried, I can not see the Attitude Era being as big as it was if he would have been an in-ring performer at the time, Shawn was once not a saint and something tells me he would have convinced Vince to take the strap off of Austin by June 1998 and put it back on HBK.

In a word, Yes.

Simply, no. There are too many who were more over, or more popular (not necessarily the same thing), or better promo people, or yes even better in ring for HBK to take the top spot. That has to go to one of the true top-tier performers in the business.

Yes, no other wrestler has drawn me into his matches or made me suspend my disbelief as much as HBK, I always wanted him to win or lose as he was HBK not for any smarky reason (well apart from his match with Chris Masters, I'd have been pissed if Shawn lost to him).
Although I never saw any of Flair's 60 minute draws for the NWA title that a lot of people base his greatness on.

Yes he is, in my opinion. He's the greatest wrestler I ever saw. His comeback years cemented it for me, especially how willing he was to put people over while looking good himself...that's practically a lost art these days.
His title run was great to watch. I have to wonder how much better the numbers would have been if he hadn't been virtually head-to-head with the nWo's hottest period for the bulk of his title run.

He's the best performer ever IMO, and I don't think second place is close.

It's hard to quantify, since there are so many different ways one can classify a "good" wrestler; certainly, by some standards, Hulk Hogan is easily the best pro wrestler of all time.
But as a total package, a guy who could put on fantastic matches, who could fire up the crowd (both in the ring and on the mic) when working as a face or a heel, who could put on crazy spotfests or technical, mat-based clinics, who could make his opponents look like a million bucks and make himself look even better, regardless of who won or lost... all that together, Michaels is easily among the greatest of all time. The only name of the last decade who even rivals him is Angle.
I'd actually agree with this... there have been wrestlers who surpassed HBK at each of these individual things, but I can think of very, very few other performers who've excelled at ALL OF THEM TOGETHER to the extent that Michaels has.

Yeah, it's like ...
Austin was a better face Hogan was a better heel Angle was a better mat wrestler Rock was a better talker Rey Mysterio was better at spotfest Triple H held more titles
But I can't think of a much better mix than HBK.
