She has a great voice, but she has some of the worse lyrics in a pop song I've ever heard. I'll concede that she can write a catchy melody though.

I started off not knowing anything about her, not being into much modern music, but heard a bit of Bad Romance in a Doctor Who documentary, and a few days later, realised the tune was still stuck in my head, so I decided to give her stuff a shot. Long story short, I'm a fan. She's got an incredibly talent for writing a catchy melody, and if anyone's heard her live piano versions of songs, they know that she's not just reliant on autotune to sound good, she has a great voice and musical ability. Her activism against homophobia is also great to see. If she has such a great voice, then she shouldn't be using Auto-Tune, period. That actually a little ... ignorant? Don't want to use that word as it has a very negative feel to it, but it's the only one I can think of at this time. (Just know I'm not trying to be offensive, perhaps, unenlightened, would be a better word? Sorry about that.) Auto-tune is sometimes used as a musical device to get a certain sound or style, not exclusively for making ones voice sound better. So yes, I'm agreeing with Bradley on this one.

I like her songs, the gimmick however is wearing thin.
Which is sad she has to resort to a gimmick to get over. Shows how much music has changed.

It wasn't meant to be used that way, and that's what I (and many others) take issue with. Use it to correct your pitch, not to make yourself sound like a robot. There's vocoders and talkboxes for that kind of thing, and even then, those should only be used in electronic music, not pop. A great example of it and similar effects being used well would be Daft Punk's various experiments. Lady Gaga just doesn't do it well. She sounds so damn fake it's not funny.

I haven't heard too much of what she's done, only a few songs here and there, but she strikes me as, I don't know, wasted potential? She's more gimmickry and attention-whoring than she is anything else (when she doesn't have to be, as the infamous video of a de-gimmicked her has shown). It feels just way, way, WAYYYYYY too forced.

Love her, seeing her tonight. Everybody is entitled to their own opinions, but you have to admit, a popstar that actually writes her own songs, has pretty much full control over her career and can actually SING is a very good thing.

Not a fan but I think she catches more flak than she deserves. considering somebody like her managed to become mainstream is a good thing. The comparisons to Madonna seem to be more about hate than actual critique. She more resembles the vocalists for Missing Persons than Madonna.

Some how I've avoided even ever hearing any of her songs. And she looks like a crack whore.
So I guess I don't like her.

Catchy songs, but the various cover versions I've heard by smaller myspace bands always seems to sound better.
Her gimmick is annoying, she's basically a glorified attention whore and her music videos are quite honestly stupid. (Telephone being the worst of the bunch simply due to the overhype it got for "LOLCONTROVERSY!")
She's a good buisnesswoman in that sense, but what's wrong with just letting your voice get you over?

Compared to nearly everyone else in popular music culture I think shes good. When I hear a Lady Gaga song on the radio I can identify it as hers, immediately, as opposed to nearly every other female musician of her ilk. Except maybe Beyonce, but I don't like her music.

Stupid gimmick, completely unoriginal, relies on shock value (meat dress anyone?) and the epitome of a culture too stupid to understand musical talent that prefers gimmickery instead.
But she has a fantastic voice.

If Lady Gaga went without the gimmick she would have a lot of indy cred but wouldn't be a millionaire nor would she have the massive fan base. That's just how things work. Movies, music, most forms of media.

She seems to be the opposite of Freddie Mercury. Freddie got over by his mind-blowing voice and great song writing, the flamboyant stuff was just a side act. Gaga, while she does have a great voice herself, seems to rely more on the crazy looks and all that stuff than her singing, although she says she loves fashion so that might be another reason.
You can really tell she was inspired by Mercury though, and not just by her stage name (for those who might not know, she got her name from the Queen song "Radio Ga Ga"), but by her attitude towards certain things and such.

Sadly, I honestly think that if she was better looking (not that she's bad looking, but she isn't popstar good looking) she wouldn't do all the outlandish stuff. She wouldn't have to. Even though I rag on it a little it's her only means of staying on top really.

Could they have gotten by on voice and music alone? Probably, but they added to it and that's the reason they are so well known and have lasting power. Personally I don't want my pop-stars to look like they just threw on whatever and drove to the gig, I want them to look different like GaGa does.

The irony of that is that now everyone is doing the "different" look to the point that just dressing NORMAL will become the new different soon. Please Katy Perry, you're gorgeous, put down the kermit the frog outfit.
