Precisely, it's using image to get yourself more over which everybody from Michael Jackson to KISS to David Bowie to Cher have used in one way or another. Could they have gotten by on voice and music alone? Probably, but they added to it and that's the reason they are so well known and have lasting power. Personally I don't want my pop-stars to look like they just threw on whatever and drove to the gig, I want them to look different like GaGa does. The irony of that is that now everyone is doing the "different" look to the point that just dressing NORMAL will become the new different soon. Please Katy Perry, you're gorgeous, put down the kermit the frog outfit. Possibly, kind of like a Glam Metal to Grunge transition all over again? That very well could be, but for the time being I'll gladly accept the weird outfits and such Now if the same could be said for rock music, I wish more rock bands had an image

LOVE her! Huge admirer and fan. I'll say it again, her concert was the most incredible one I've been to, and I've been to 50+ over the years

She's helping get more attention drawn to electronic music of all genres, from people looking for places to find other music that's even vaguely similar. I'm cool with that. Even though I don't really like her music, I can see why it would appeal to a lot of people, and there's no harm in that.

She looks like a female Tom Petty and her music sucks. Way too much auto-tune and artificial crap in her and pop music in general. She is ugly but at least she has a gimmick.

Dear Lady Gaga;
David Bowie called. He said; "Your gimmick's familiar somehow, can't place it. Oh, by the way, if you don't have some talent once the novelty wears off, the barn is full of one-trick ponies. And they're always adding onto the stable."

I'm not a huge fan, but I do believe she's probably one of the most musically talented women in the business right now. I'm not attracted to her, but she's definitely a gifted artist. I will give her all the kudos for not depending on auto tune (like Ke$ha) on all of her tracks, and utilizing her real voice.

I'm indifferent towards her.
From what I've herd from her music isn't bad but she tries way way too hard with that outlandish behavior and costumes which makes her look stupid not outrageous.

I'm completely ambivalent towards her.
Her music isn't any different from any other pop act, but I definitely give her credit for being a well trained and talented pianist and somebody capable of writing their own material. Thing is, her music has no appeal whatsoever for me.
I do like that she uses her celebrity to speak for things she feels are important, and, again, she's certainly talented, but I don't feel like her music stands on its own without the image to back it up. It's pop music, nothing more, nothing less, nothing special, at least to me.

I have no opinion of her music as I couldn't name any of her songs, but she turned me off completely by showing up at her sister's graduation in one of her ridiculous outfits.
Let her have her moment for gawd's sake, you don't have to attention whore at every moment.
She just comes off as someone who was called ugly as a youth and now has to be the center of attention every second as an adult.

I've only heard a handful of her songs, but they're catchy as all hell and I approve of her methods of finding ways to stand out without resorting to outright shock value. So yeah, she's good with me. You think she hasn't resorted to outright shock value? I rest my case. ;D BTW I like her music and her wacky clothes. People who hate her said the exact same thing about Bowie in the 70s. EDIT I totally had to post this. LOL ;D

Oh yeah, musical taste is completely subjective, but I just find pop to generally be boring, or at least a guilty pleasure if we're talking 80's pop. I really feel like pop hasn't done anything compelling since Michael Jackson, to be honest, but again it's all subjective.

BTW I like her music and her wacky clothes. People who hate her said the exact same thing about Bowie in the 70s. That's precisely WHY I dislike her. She's following Bowie's career pattern. And it's bad enough to be so blatant about it that, but she follows it up with lousy pop garbage. At least Bowie was a provocative musical artist who just so happened to be weird-looking. Gaga is shock value for the sake of it. Jed Shaffer ~She's a musical Howard Stern. All sizzle, no steak.

I like her music but the whole shock value gimmick is just lame. I especially hate how most artists are copying the exact same thing. Eh, that's how the media works. Sadly, it's mostly looks or controversy > talent.

See I can't buy that, Bowie knew exactly what he was doing with the image the same way KISS & Alice Cooper did. They knew that the image would get them attention along with the music, they didn't think that nobody would notice the weird getups. That's not to take away from any of the mentioned artist's talent, but I don't think they just so happened to look weird, it was all intentional to increase curiousity and marketability. So maybe she is in a way following what Bowie is doing, but she is in no way the first to take the theatrical approach to music.
