Going back a few decades, Fleetwood Mac seemed to be considered as a whole, and not just "Stevie Nicks and friends" and Jefferson Airplane. Any others? Gotta disagree. Grace Slick was quite a scene all her own. She just never left despite all incarnations of the band. Stevie Nicks did leave Fleetwood Mack and did a very successful tour and albums w/o the band you just put lousy aresed Christina McNichols in her place. I have to throw some salt for a moment. Gwen Steffani and No Doubt made a point of lampooning female singers and their overshadowing the rest of the band in a music video for Don't Speak in 96. then she went about making appearences by the dozen, singing on other people's tracks ect. without mentioning her band. I won't say the break they took was her fault because I just do not know that but I found that vid hypocritical. Still love Gwen and love No Doubt but that stuck in my craw Especially given the video for No Doubt's "Underneath It All" where there's about a minute where its the whole band, but the other 3 and a half minutes are just Gwen.

No Doubt is one of my favorite bands and I know people agree that Gwen basically overshadowed the rest of the band, but that never seemed to be that case for me. I don't know how to explain it, but I was always a fan of the band as a whole.

The thing w/ No Doubt is... that last album... it may as well been a Gwen Stefanni album. Bunch of pop music w/ synths. The band didn't even need to be there.

Except that the members of No Doubt that usually wrote the music...also wrote the music for Rock Steady. And I'd hesitate to say it was pure pop. It was very heavily reggae influenced, sort of roaming in their ska/reggae influences. It was poppy sure, but only so far as any other No Doubt album is poppy. I'm not arguing that it wasn't The Gwen Show by this point, because it absolutely was, I'm just saying that Rock Steady was still written as a band, and not just producers writing for Gwen Stefani.

I don't really like the argument that it was a "Gwen" album for the very reason that the whole band was writing for it and seemed to be into that sound. Sure it's not as ska as the older ones, but they were already on a new wave/synth-y path since "Return of Saturn".

Not the lead singer, but Sean Yseult in White Zombie certainly seemed to fit in nicely.
Oh, and aside from that one dicknose with Hear/Say (who repeatedly referred to her as such while reviewing Swoon, but that paper's not known for its copy editing anyways), no one's assuming Nikki Moninger is the singer or frontwoman for Silversun Pickups.

This is Magic Dirt. The woman is the most recognised of them but she doesn't overshadow them. Surem they're also not hugely well known but it still counts.

All this No Doubt/Gwen stuff makes you wonder what would've happened if their original lead singer hadn't killed himself.

My Bloody Valentine - Mainly because Kevin Shields overshadows everyone else by himself, but Kevin and Belinda might as well be the band, since Debbie says she basically did as she was instructed to, and Colm was so unable to record drum sessions during the making of Loveless that he was sampled on every song except for 2 during the recording sessions.
Arcade Fire - Not a single member of that group screams "Break away and go solo", especially Regine.
Portishead - Can anyone name a member of this group off the top of their heads? I don't even think of them as individuals.
Shiny Toy Guns, Sleigh Bells, Brazilian Girls, Warpaint, the xx, and to a certain extent the Yeah Yeah Yeahs can be included too.

No way. The spotlight is all rightfully on Jenny Lewis. I don't even think of them as individuals. Shiny Toy Guns, Sleigh Bells, Brazilian Girls, Warpaint, the xx, and to a certain extent the Yeah Yeah Yeahs can be included too. The xx and Arcade Fire are pretty great choices, but using Warpaint is totally cheating (there are four female members and all of them sing, plus this topic seems to be about female singers versus a male band) and I don't buy the Yeah Yeah Yeahs at all (the crazy outfits alone make it all about Karen O -- the other guys are wallflowers by comparison). I'm still not sure either way on Sleigh Bells but am leaning toward your argument as both those guys are getting a lot of attention nowadays. Last thing: for anyone doubting that Gwen Stefani was the outright star of No Doubt, all you need to do is look at the Tragic Kingdom cover to see how important she is compared to the rest of the band:
