For the people who said Michael Cera - I agree, but he's type cast.
Youth in Revolt was a departure for him.

Yes. He showed quite a range attempting to oversee a violent and chaotic prison as warden Leo Glynn in Oz. Well, to be fair, he basically just did "Overworked and annoyed hard-ass guy" the entire series. He also was the bad guy in the Substitue. I think guys like Ernie Hudson are mainly character actors - so they're really not going to get parts with a lot of range.

Is Helena Bonham Carter a good comedic actress? All she plays is rather unique women in dramas. I honest believe she could be oscar worthy if she wanted to be, but she's married to Tim Burton so she's doomed for a life of kooky roles.

Paul "One Note" Walker. Lucking into the Fast franchise is the only reason he has a career. It sure ain't because of his acting ability.

I don't think he's that great of an actor.

I don't think he's that great of an actor. Denzel Washington doesn't think you're that great of a critic. I kid, I kid.

Please tell me this is a joke. I would actually agree with this if it wasn't for Training Day. Denzel does kind of play the same guy each time. Like Christopher Walken - its entertaining, but still, same guy each movie for the most part. I think that's why they didn't give him the Academy Award until Training Day because he basically did the same gimmick in most of his movies until then. Typecasting is a motherf***er. Another actor with seemingly limited range. Leo DiCaprio. Aside from being able to do crappy accents he spends an entire movie looking confused.

The thing about "range" is that its not about whether or not someone's a good actor.
Someone can be a great actor, but not have strong range.
Take Denzel for example. He's a great actor - one of the best. He can take the most poorly written line and make it sound like Shakespearean dialogue. He's that good.
But for the most part - his range is limited. Again, that doesn't mean he's a bad actor not worthy of praise, but he just doesn't have great range or doesn't show it. Training Day was an example of him stepping out and taking a chance by showing some range.
Actors like Gary Oldman, Daniel Day Lewis or Judy Greer have range. Val Kilmer is not the strongest actor, imo, but he has great range. Same for Kevin Spacey.
Is Val Kilmer a better actor than Denzel Washington? I'd say no, but he's shown more range in his career.

Steven Seagal. Every movie he shows up in, he plays the same type of character just about. A bad ass out for revenge. He also has never lost a fight from what I have seen. I haven't watched Machete yet.

Those who say Keanu Reeves needs to watch The Gift, Hardball, Sweet November, The Watcher, and The Lake House. He has range and is very underrated in my opinion. The Gift is his masterpiece of a performance. His acting in that film convinced me to stay about 500 feet away from him. People should watch Bill and Ted. Then watch The Gift. And then apologise for saying he has no range. Seth Rogen is an actor with no range!
