I'm not saying the characters aren't different or that he's not a good actor. But the characters all share simililar qualities in terms of intensity, darkness, brooding, violent, etc. Sure Bruce Wayne and Connor aren't the exact same guys - but they share many similar qualities. Just like Denzel in Fallen isn't the exact same as Denzel in Deja Vu, but they share many similar qualities that Denzel frequently portrays. That's what range is about I liked Denzel in Fallen and Deja Vu a lot, but there's just not a lot of range there. Same with Bale. It may be the exception that proves the rule to your Bale theory, but Rescue Dawn shoots holes in the "only dark and brooding" description of his roles. You don't brood your way out of a Viet Cong prison camp in the middle of nowhere, you take action! Hell, Daniel Faraday spends the whole movie telling him the plan is impossible, but Bale is way too gung-ho to be stopped! I'll have to check that one out, but thus far the guy's body work has largely lacked the kind of range that people are trying to credit him for. I think a lot of people are misled by the misconception that great acting = great range automatically. You can be a great actor and have terrible range and vice versa.

Not sure I get the Bale thing. Batman Trilogy - Scared little boy who never grew up becomes a vigilante. Equilibrium - Man devoid of emotion embraces the beauty of life and fights his superiors. Shaft - Racist jackass. Terminator Salvation - self doubting saviour of mankind. The characters are completely different. Maybe the point is he doesn't differentiate in terms of his acting style, but his Bruce Wayne is nothing like his character in Equilibrium. I'm not saying the characters aren't different or that he's not a good actor. But then, I wouldn't want to see Bale in a romantic comedy where he's smiling all the time. It'd just feel wrong. Sort of like how I cringe when I see De Niro in a comedy - it shows he's trying to have range, but not everyone can pull off the comedy-dramatic shift.

Oh, I agree that most of Bale's "big" movies could be presented in that light, but he also has roles like The Fighter, Rescue Dawn and The Prestige where he does break out of the "dark, brooding" pigeonhole. But I agree with your range not equalling talent. Take Jack Nicholson. He's all shades of awesome, but he essentially is playing Jack Nicholson in every role he takes. Same could be said for Al Pacino after the mid 1980's.

You mean the fact that she comes across as merely a physically attractive piece of dead-on-the-inside meat? I mean, sure, she is really pretty, but if the eyes are the window to the soul then she is missing hers. I've heard that if Kristen Stewart and Kelly Kelly look into eachothers eyes, an alternate dimension is created. The Dark Void of Soulless Cuties. *whispers* It DOES exist..

Christian Bale. Let's see - he can play the dark brooding hero loner or Batman. I haven't seen the fighter - I hear he makes a good crack head though. I think he's just typecast. I'm not a very big Bale fan but he showed good range in American Psycho and The Machinist. Bale is very good in Rescue Dawn.

Nicholson's most recent exception (that I've seen anyway) is About Schmidt.

People should watch Bill and Ted. Then watch The Gift. And then apologise for saying he has no range. Seth Rogen is an actor with no range! For Reeves - My Own Private Idaho showed a side that I'd never seen before or since. With Reeves, I already know he has range just based on one movie: Rock on Ortiz.

As much as I love Stallone- he has a very small range.
a)loveable loser who is misunderstood b)tough guy
You wouldnt see him doing something like Philledalphia, Broke Back Mountain or any period pieces.
Arnold can only play 2 roles a)Bad Ass Tough Guy b) Fish Out of Water (Kindergarden Cop)

I disagree about Stallone.
I think he does have some range with movies such as Cliffhanger, Daylight and Cop Land.
