Ron Howard deserves a mention. He deserves more than just a mention, he deserves the undisputed title of "most successful child star". Just look at his resume; the level of success he has achieved, and the generations he has spanned. 1960s (age 4-12): portrays Opie on "The Andy Griffith Show", one of the most successful and critically-acclaimed programs on television during the era. Early 1970s (early teen years): has prominent roles in "American Graffiti" and "The Shootist". Late 1970s (early 20s): stars in "Happy Days", arguably the most popular show on television at the time. 1980s (30s): directs "Splash", "Cocoon", "Willow" and "Parenthood". 1990s (40s): directs "Backdraft", "Apollo 13" and "Ransom". Becomes co-chairman of Imagine Entertainment along with Brian Grazer. 2000s (50s): executive producer of "Arrested Development", directs "How The Grinch Stole Christmas", "A Beautiful Mind" (for which he won the Oscar for Best Director), "Cinderella Man", "The Da Vinci Code", "Frost/Nixon" and "Angels & Demons". 2010s (60s): working on "The Dark Tower", Stephen King's magnum opus. No child star from any generation can stake a claim to the kind of success Ron Howard has achieved, and he's been doing it since he was 4 years old. Whether or not you like his work is up for debate, but there's no debate to the level of success he has achieved.

As Dennis Leary put it, there are 2, count it 2 child Stars who came out the other end unscathed and normal. Ron Howard and Jodie Foster. Others might be okay now but those are the two that ran the gambit without a scratch.

Danielle Harris is getting steady work as well(she's become the new Scream Queen).
Katherine Heigl
Hayden Panettiere, although she might still need a few more years under her belt.
Allison Mack
Brittany Snow
Bethany Joy Galeotti(One Tree Hill; started out as a teenager in the movie Stephen King's Thinner, then joined the soap Guiding Light)

His brother started as a child actor and has had a decent career, he's not a big star, but he's been able to have a career. Plus just like Ron, Clint Howard seems like a nice guy.

And speaking of which, Mila Kunis has been going nonstop since she was 11. fixed And with that, my 5 year streak of "Forgetting Santa With Muscles Ever Existed" is over. Thanks a lot.

#1, Ron Howard.
Another one to consider is Bill Mumy. He was young Will Robinson on the 60's series "Lost in Space". He's gone on to be a successful actor (was a regular on "Babylon 5"), a writer of comics, and a musician (and responsible for one of the greatest music videos of all time...)

Does Justin Timberlake at all count as a child star? If so, I nominate him as well.

The guy who played Allen Strange is doing pretty good. He finally realized his dream of becoming a WWE Referee. wow is this for real? No. Just Kidding. I've always thought they kinda look alike.

Ron Howard deserves a mention. This is THE definitive answer. Period. Started extremely young. Was on 2 popular series and then made some of the greatest films ever. How can he NOT be the winner?

I thought no one was going to mention Kurt Russell. He's done well for himself, and it's rumored the last words Walt Disney ever spoke where is name.

Mickey Rooney was a child star in the silent era and is now entering his tenth decade of acting. Natalie Wood may have become legendary had she not died young.
Ron Howard is sucessful as an adult but it is not from acting but directing. Christina Applegate was popular during Married... with Children but I would not say she has become a star.

I'm a little confused on "star". Are we talking anybody who's ever done anything when they were young or people who were, for lack of a better word, important.

I agree with you Alabastergrim. Ron Howard was a star but saying he was a bigger star than Mickey Rooney is going overboard. Mickey Rooney is in another league than Ron Howard.

Jeff Bridges was acting very young too, hell his first role on imdb has him at age 2.

Ok I will but he'll just grab Juno, Tommy Solomon, Ras Al Ghul and Bane and then they'll invade my dreams.
