I'm away for three or four months and you guys let my fantastically awesome all-purpose Japanese RPG megathread fall into the archives? Grrr... we had just barely reached 10 pages! So yes, this is where we fight over which Final Fantasy was the best (VI) and which Shin Megami Tensei game you should play (all of them) and whine about Nintendo not releasing Xenoblade Chronicles in America. (It was, however, released in Europe, so that's something) We might also be horrified by the cutscenes in Star Ocean: EDGE MAVERICK The Last Hope. Oh yeah and then there's this: p-atlus.jp/ Those of you who appreciate quality games might recognize the color scheme and the font. Those of you who don't recognize it, that style is unmistakably Persona 4, and internet rumors have been talking about a possible PlayStation Vita version of the game. Persona 4 on a portable system? Take my money, Atlus. Speaking of Atlus taking my money, this is also coming out in a couple of weeks: Want. Pre-ordered. Persona 2: Innocent Sin is the only game in the Persona series that has not been released outside Japan so far, and I'm going to assume that the second part of the Persona 2 story - Persona 2: Eternal Punishment - will show up on the PSP as well sooner or later.

I know this is a huge travesty to most of the JRPG community...but I didn't really like Persona 3. The battle system was alright, but I played it for about 40 hours, and all of those hours felt incredibly repetitive and dull to me. I wanted to like it so bad, as I don't think I've ever heard a negative word about it, but I just don't. I didn't like the music, either.
I haven't played Persona 4, but P3 just rubbed me the wrong way so significantly that I'm not sure I'm willing to ever try P4.
As for what I'm doing now, I'm playing through the entire FF series, sans the ones I've beaten fairly recently (IX and X). I'm not playing them in any particular order...but I'm currently on VII, at the very end. Just need to grind and beat Sephiroth.

Persona 4 uses the same basic engine as P3, but they improved pretty much everything about the game. The battle system is vastly improved (no more stupid AI teammates, you can directly control everyone), the dungeons have more variety and there's less grinding. There's more story stuff now as well so it doesn't get as repetitive, and the writing is generally excellent and extremely funny at times with the characters being more likable than in Persona 3. Despite being a SMT game it's far less dark than P3, you no longer even shoot yourself in the head or anything. On the soundtrack front, they ditched the rapper guy who had those giant novelty marbles in his mouth. The music is more of a j-pop style now, with a bunch of SMT signature hard rock battle themes for good measure. With that said... you liked Star Ocean 4, right? Please tell me how you managed that, because I'd rather have live hornets crawling over my face than see EDGE MAVERICK and his crew ever again. ;D Games are still released on the PSP? Eeeeyup. It's basically THE machine to own if you enjoy JRPGs.

I liked just about everything about it, actually. I guess I can just stomach more bad stuff than most people, I know damn near everyone hated that game...but I thought it was a whole lot of fun. As for P4, it still has the social link system, right? If so...that was probably my least favorite part of P3. I hated babysitting relationships so people wouldn't get mad at me. Hanging out with them was always really boring to me. I know it's like the most well-liked feature of the game...but I just really disliked it. Considering everything else is streamlined though, perhaps it's better in 4. I may give it a shot someday, but probably only if I have a lot of money/can find it really cheap/borrow it from someone someday.

Am I right in saying that Persona 2 doesn't feature social links? If not what do you do all day?
ALso is Persona 4 expensive in America? You can still get sealed copies for £10-15 in England.

Am I right in saying that Persona 2 doesn't feature social links? If not what do you do all day? It's more of a traditional JRPG and plays like you might expect a PSone RPG from 1999 to play. You can also talk to monsters during battle to get items, and when you go around talking to NPCs in the overworld you can spread rumors which will then come true at some point in the game (that is a plot point). I did! I liked just about everything about it, actually. I guess I can just stomach more bad stuff than most people, I know damn near everyone hated that game...but I thought it was a whole lot of fun. Well yes, with SO4 you kinda have to be able to stomach a LOT more bad stuff than you usually get in JRPGs (and that is a metric f***ton of bad stuff). I can enjoy a lot of "bad" games as well, but even I draw the line somewhere and for me that line goes right through the heads of Lymle and Welch. Yes, but that is streamlined and improved as well, and the S.Link paths contain some of the most memorable scenes the game has to offer. You get a lot more S.Link points than you did in P3, and it's basically impossible to make people dislike you unless you intentionally pick the dickhead answers. They no longer get pissed if you don't hang out with them, either, and they're generally a lot more likable than most of the morons you'd hang out with in P3.

I meant to edit the first one. Thank GOD they don't get pissed when you don't hang out with them. Your friends in P3 were some of the most unreasonable self-centered assholes I've ever seen. And yeah, I mean I didn't think the bad stuff in SO4 was all that bad, frankly. But I have weird tastes, and I'm just not annoyed by some stuff as much as others are.

This is the worst thing (I didn't even make it this far, thankfully) But yeah, if you liked The Last Hope, more power to you I guess. I thought the battle system was pretty decent, but the rest of the game was just too much for me to withstand.

Even I thought that was pretty awful. But yeah, the battle system was really fun, even if it didn't do that much different for the Star Ocean series, and I liked the plot, generally. Not saying it was great, just saying I enjoyed it for what it was.

Looking forward to Persona 2, even though I don't have a PSP. Probably should pick one up at some point.
I agree on the best Final Fantasy being VI, unless you're going to include Tactics. Cause Tactics kicks ass.
Persona 4 was my entryway into SMT. Ended up getting P3:FES, played that, then 4, then Devil Summoner 2, Devil Survivor, Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2, Strange Journey, Devil Summoner in that order. With the Dark Version of DemiKids thrown in somewhere. Have Persona and P3P sitting until I get a PSP.
Have to say, the two DDSs were my favorite of the bunch, with the Devil Summoners a close second.
I've been replaying Final Fantasy X, and ignoring the parts of the game that pissed me off the first time I played it, which is anytime Tidus is able to speak. The game is a lot better that way, because the gameplay itself is awesome. I don't even mind the Sphere Grid. The mini-games are terrible though. Spent I think a half-hour trying to do the damn Chocobo Catcher race, already given up on the lightning dodging and butterfly catching. I was trying to catch all the monsters for the arena but the process of doing so made me fall asleep twice so I don't think I'm going to finish that either.

I really need to get around to playing Strange Journey and Devil Survivor now that I have a 3DS. There's also Devil Survivor Overclocked, I guess, but 3DS games are region locked (which is the single most boneheaded move Nintendo has made in god knows how long and I won't shut up about it until someone bypasses the lock) and I'm exactly not holding my breath for a PAL release.

Devil Survivor is sort of close to Persona 3 & 4 in terms of characters, but with a more typical apocalypse setting. Strange Journey is really good, parts of it kind of drag a little but the game system is great, especially demon customizations, which lets you get a little more life out of weaker demons. I don't have a 3DS but even if I did I wouldn't be in much of a hurry to play Overclocked. Don't think they added enough more to warrant another purchase, and I think DS2 is coming out next year anyway.

My first entry into the series was Digital Devil Saga 1, which I really liked. Sadly, my copy of it disappeared mysteriously a few years back, and I never got the chance to beat it. I'll have to track it and 2 down again someday.
As for the other entries in the series that I've played, there aren't many. I have Persona 2 Eternal Punishment for the PS1, but I've been hesitant to play it because I wanted to play Innocent Sin first, but had little hope of it ever being localized. Fortunately, that's finally changing...so I'll grab it at some point and then play both. I've also played one of the Super Famicom entries, though I can't remember which one it was for the life of me. It's been quite some time, and I gave up on it because the fan translation was a) not very good, and b) pretty seriously incomplete. Beyond that, I'm pretty sure I haven't played any of the other SMT games.

Guess who just figured out how to record video off a PCSX2 emulator without terrible frame rate issues! This means that I can realize a certain project the way I intended. Which project, you might ask? You remember when I did my Let's Play of Persona 4 last year? No? Well, it was in Forum Games so I don't blame you. Anyway, I had a lot of fun doing that, so one of these days I shall return to the world of Let's Play once more... until then, here's a nice screenshot of the fellow we shall be seeing a lot of shortly. Very soon, he will put on his new face and run into the night. His name is Minato Arisato. The game is Persona 3 FES. (and no, I will not be doing a VLP of the whole thing, it'll be mostly screenshots with video for animated cutscenes and boss fights)

Hey, anyone here ever played Romancing Saga for the PS2? I made the mistake of buying it for 4.99 at a local video game store. It's easily the worst RPG I've ever played.

I've been wanting to play it but it's too damn expensive for a PS2 title.

Not particularly good, I'm afraid, I had no idea what I was doing at the time and there were tons of technical issues throughout the whole thing. Now I'm much more proficient at the whole LP thing, so this should turn out a lot better. lparchive.org/Persona-4/Update%2001/ This is an actual good LP of Persona 4, by Something Awful user Feinne. There is also a very, very good Persona 3 LP on the Archive, by another SA user by the name of Schildkrote. I will do my best to make this P3 FES runthrough and my narration different from that one.

Wasn't that great anyway.
