And they're still doing stuff with then this isn't even really milking, just continuing a story in one case and trying something new, and rereleasing a game people love in a more convient way.

Thing is, though, Atlus themselves said that they made P3P because the company was in rough financial waters (before Index Holdings bought them out) and they knew it would sell. That's what milking is, repeatedly rereleasing something with new bells and whistles because you know it'll sell, and now we've got 3 versions of a five-year-old game.
There have been nine Persona-related releases/announcements now in the last five years (P3, P3 FES, P3P, P4, P4 Golden, P4 Mayonaka Arena, Persona PSP, P2 Innocent Sin PSP, and the 3DS Persona game). That's as many versions of Persona 3 and 4 as Final Fantasy IV and VII (the posterboys for brand milking) had versions and spin-offs across almost twenty years. And Shoji Meguro said he wants to make a PSP version of Persona 2: Eternal Punishment if he can.
Compare with Megaten's other core series: two Devil Summoner games (the Raidou Kuzunoha games), one "Megami Ibunroku"-titled game (Devil Survivor, which got a sequel and a 3DS port) and one main series game (Strange Journey), though admittedly main series SMT games come out once every blue moon. That's six for everything else.
A large part of why it's disheartening is me being worried about the future of the other series. It seems like they're being more and more cast aside by the Persona games.

I got my facts wrong on that and am editing my post. I think there is a Persona game in development for 3DS, but it apparently hasn't been confirmed to be a P3 port and I misread. Sorry about that.

Not if you don't pick him. (...But why wouldn't you pick Gig? He's awesome.)

It seems like they're being more and more cast aside by the Persona games. And if you want to get technical, isn't Catherine's protagonist a background character in P3P? I wouldn't be too worried about the other non-Persona series though. Even with all the Persona releases in recent years, we've gotten Strange Journey, Devil Summoner 2, Devil Survivor, and Devil Survivor 2 coming next year, plus the 3DS release of Devil Survivor, which if it weren't for the number of Persona titles would seem to be overkill for SMT anyway. I would love to see a current-gen console main series release though.

Yeah, you're right. I still wish they'd put a little more into the other series though, as the main series is my personal favorite and they need right now to remake Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers or Shin Megami Tensei: if... and get a wider release of them. If... would be especially good, since the female version of the game's main character shows up in Persona 2. You mentioned Devil Survivor and that's a good point as well, as Devil Survivor 2 outsold the first game's numbers in Japan for its first week by around 6500. The first game also sold well beyond expectations over here, so that's a potentially successful new series for Atlus. I absolutely agree that there needs to be a new console Megaten game. Persona 5 seems to be the next one though, and who knows how long the wait will be for it. And yeah, I think Vincent from Catherine does make a cameo in P3P.

And yeah, I think Vincent from Catherine does make a cameo in P3P. Yeah, he does. You can find him hitting the booze at Club Escapade, and if you talk to him he'll tell you how his life is a goddamn mess.

Terrible (and terribly late) news, as the co-founder and CEO of Game Arts and creator of Grandia, Takeshi Miyaji, died on July 29th. Circumstances not stated. Sucks, 45's too young to go. And he and Game Arts made some true classics. www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2011/08/01/miyaji_death/Sorry, Starman Deluxe.

That is sad news. Grandia is one of my favorite games of all-time. Not sure if he was involved with them, but the two Lunar games are in my favorites as well.

So, I got some spending money and I got a PSP. Might be a stupid decision on the surface, but I've got no real desire to buy a Vita till well after its price drops, and even then only if it's got a decent library. Also got Yggdra Union and Valkyria Chronicles II and preordered Devil Survivor 2 and Persona 2: Innocent Sin, so I am set. (for now, haha)
I'd also wholeheartedly welcome recommendations for good PSP games, if that's alright. I had to pass on Tactics Ogre since I didn't have quite enough for it, but it's top of the list.

Re-playing Prinny 2. Fun, yet hard game. Prinny 1 was hard, but I managed to go through that without losing all 1000 lives.

Don't have a PSP, but I've heard good things about FFTactics and Jeanne D'Arc. Also, Persona and Persona 3. Think they just released a collection of everything involving FFIV for the PSP as well. I feel the same way about the Vita. I have a hard enough time justifying the cost of a PSP, and combined with a lack of steady, decent income I'm not in a hurry to spend a lot on a hand-held.

The Tactics Port kind of sucks, hella slowdown, enough to make me say screw it. Jeanne D'Arc is great.

Jeanne D'Arc is decent. It's a bit too easy though. Tactics Ogre is definitely quite good, though it got easier compared to the PS1 game.
Disgaea 1 & 2 are also nice, and the spin-off Prinny games are fun but really hard. Zettai Hero Project too.

Even if Tactics Ogre: Wheel of Fortune was the worst remake/port of all time (and despite the fact that the localization team's seemingly gone completely out of their way to change every frakking name and the game's being somewhat "Ivalicized") I'd still be obligated to buy it. When I first played Ogre Battle 64 back in 2000 it was like tasting the forbidden fruit, and I've been in absolute love with the series ever since. Tactics Ogre's my favorite game of the series, and probably my favorite SRPG of all time.
I actually saw Jeanne d'Arc at Disc Replay today and was tempted, but a. I wasn't sure about the PSP thing and b. the box was in sort of s*** condition, and I'm sort of a stickler about that kind of thing. It's a Level-5 game, so you expect greatness.
I already got Persona, the deluxe edition with the soundtrack, back for $24.99 new during the dying days of Game Crazy, but I had no PSP to play it on till now.
I also picked up 999: 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors. Waited unwittingly for the price drop, good deal.
I also wanna say thanks for the recommendations thus far. You guys definitely always bring the good taste. Thanks a lot.
