Mental illness combined with extreme ideological underpinnings. Its a perfect storm of dangerous, since each can be deadly in and of themselves.
This is the end game of hate. Hate for any reason, be it political, religious, or whatever.

I'm reading that it took them 90 minutes to stop him on the island. He killed almost one person per minute :/ I heard he was disguised as a policeman, and that there wasn't any others on the island (or something like that). As well, it must be remembered that every policeman in Olso, and Norway to some extent, were focused on the bomb and trying to sort that out, so he was able to get some time under the radar until the attention of the police was gained. A truly horrific event, RIP to all those killed.

Tragic event.
One thing that is for sure. 2011 has been a horrible year so far.

Aidan: Yes, he was indeed disguised as a policeman. As far as how long it took the police to act... Let's put it this way, I don't think we were sufficiently prepared for what happened on friday, but I do believe the police worked as fast as they possibly could under the circumstances. I'll translate the official time line for you. - 3:26 pm - First report of explosion in the centre of Oslo.
- 3:28 pm - First patrol on the scene. Police bomb squad is mobilized and on its way.
- 5:27 pm - Police in North Buskerud receive first reports of shootings on Utøya.
- 5:30 pm - Police in Oslo receive first reports of shootings on Utøya.
- 5:38 pm - Police in North Buskerud requiest support from Oslo.
- 5:52 pm - Police in North Buskerud arrive at Utstranda (coast off Utøya). Forced to wait for a suitable boat.
- 6:03 pm - Police have confirmation that a suitable boat for a police action is on its way.
- 6:09 pm - Delta force (Police Response for Armed missions) arrives at Utstranda.
- 6:25 pm - Delta force lands on Utøya together with local police.
- 6:27 pm - Arrest.
It may seem like it took way too long, but resources were tied up in Oslo, and as I said ... no one saw this coming. We're a small and generally peaceful country. Coverage in the news have slowed down somewhat and people are trying to get back to normal life, but they just released a list of still missing people. A total of 46 are still missing. Worst case scenario, and this is all too probable, 131 innocent people were killed on that island. To put this in perspective there were 31 murders in 2010. The whole year. Seems every time it seems things can't get worse, they do... edit: cleaned up the timeline.

It definitely would make sense if the bomb is Oslo was just a diversion tactic, so that he would have a lot of time on the island :/

Apparently, this guy used Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 as a "training simulator" That doesnt suprise me. While the games themselves aren't going to be making people in to nutbags the more realistic they get the more they can be used for such a thing.

I guess that that's a little good news, but it's still way too high. Absolutely horrific.
I don't mean to sound creepy, but incidents like these fascinate me in a morbid way. When people go crazy and do such horrible things like this, I get curious as to their motives and mentality, and try to understand what was going through their heads to make them decide that killing innocent people was justifiable. From Columbine to Virginia Tech to Timothy McVeigh and on and on, I want to try to understand what made them snap.
I've been reading the perpetrator's long political manifesto that he wrote. I'm having similar reactions to when I first read the Unabomber manifesto; it's hardly the writings of a raving lunatic. It's a very controversial, but straightforward expression of his cultural and political views, and his criticisms of where society was going. And like with the Unabomber, what could've merely been controversial, but thought-provoking, material for discussion, has instead been associated with inexcusable murderous acts.
I mean, clearly this guy isn't stupid; these acts were carried out with a planning that only an intelligent person could've planned. Which makes it even more baffling that he thought that slaughtering over 70 innocent kids would help promote his beliefs.

No wonder you're having similar reactions, he copied a lot of it word for word from the unabomber's manifesto. Other parts have been copied from other places. He has of course written a great deal of his 1500 page admission of evil, but mostly stuff about his personal life, plans etc. His ideology is a blatant rip off of other people's work. He may be intelligent. He may also be a nutcase living in his own personal fantasy world. Either way, I don't really care. He did what he did, and I don't really care for an explanation anymore. Does not matter. Let him rot in prison. Talk and think about those who were killed and those left behind, they are the ones who deserve to be remembered. Not that piece of shit murdering asshole. On that note, today we took to the streets to show that we our support of the those affected by the horrors of friday, and to show that we stand united. Three days after a bomb struck Oslo's city center, this is what it looked like: www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-14281494This happened all over Norway, in cities large and small. Now it's time to move on.

If you wanted realism, the ArmA and Operation Flashpoint series would've been much more effective.
