I guess with DC,they figured that they didn;t need to make a major gay hero because they already had Midnighter and Apollo, albeit on an imprint. now that those guys are in the DCU proper, it might not even be an issue. whereas they didn't really have a lesbian hero anywhere else hence Batwoman and Renee Montoya/Question 2 were added.

Possibly. Midnight and Apollo wont last for long though, in that their series wont last for long imo. They worked as a shipped Batman and Superman in their imprint, but I cant see them staying as they have been within the main DCU, they will be toned and powered down and I just dont think they will have the draw, not to mention they are in a team led by perinial non-draw the Martian Manhunter and written by Paul Cornell, a guy who is very good, but cursed to never get a series past 13 issues. It certainly will be interesting to see what happens, esepecially seen as Didio is one of those guys who hasnt been the most open to anything camp in the past, so one hopes any gay characters introduced or used wont become stereotypes considering that stereotype is one he supposedly doesnt like.
