I'm of the impression that Rock's promo was intentionally 'meh' (I didn't think it was terrible) and I really don't feel like that's a crazy position to have. I mean, it's a scripted television show. Also, the discussions/arguments that are coming from this are making me excited to see what happens next.

I'm not convinced that the promo was intentionally bad myself, mostly as they didn't end with Rock standing in the ring in doubt or anything, they ended with him posing as his music played.

The reason I don't buy the idea that Rock "sucked on purpose" is because he's talented enough to make himself look a lot worse than that. His work as Hollywood Rock with the Hurricane was a much more clear example of him "showing ass", as they say. But I don't think he was meant to look totally crushed and beaten, he was meant to look shaken, surprised, thrown off, which he did. It'd be silly of The Rock to sell Cena's words like a shotgun shot, so he's given his supporters a reason to doubt him.

The problem is that this is what THEY want, not what the PEOPLE want, and as you can see in the building last night, they have a long uphill battle to make that happen. For the last time, they are not trying to make people like Cena. What they are trying to do, and Stephanie McMahon made this clear last year, is that they want people to take sides like Team Edward/Team Jacob Twilight fans. There is no heel. There is no face. Each one states their case and the fans choose sides. Why people can't see this is mindboggling to me.

What they seem to have done is sat down together to watch the WWE Greatest Rivalries DVD and made notes. On that DVD, Bret and Shawn talk about how initially their rivalry was a work that was even meant to fool their colleagues backstage, about how their insults went from insulting each other's wrestling character ("Fruity Pebbles", etc. would be today's equivalent) to crossing the line and insulting the men behind the characters (like how Cena pointed out Dwayne's weakness in relying on notes written on his wrist for his promo). I don't think they're trying to make Cena 'equal', or that The Rock deliberately gave a bad promo. They just want the audience to think they legit hate each other so that there's more interest in the match. Just a hunch, mind

Here's my argument for what happened Monday. I'm not saying that it was guaranteed to end up looking like Rock tanked, but is it really that far-fetched? I mean, what happened the week before? A hastily thrown together heel turn by Eve followed by some good ol' slut shaming. Why was that done so quickly? No way to know for sure but Cena sure seemed like he was catching some crap even from his supporters due to how the whole Ryder/Eve/Cena/Kane drama quadrilateral went down. So, logically they shift all of that to Eve and no one mentions things like Cena being into that kiss again. So knowing that they're willing to throw someone else under the bus (yes I know it's Eve, but still), how is it hard to believe that they would set this up to once again have Cena come out smelling like roses? The notes are a give-away, since I definitely do not recall him needing notes before (perhaps the cameras did a good job of hiding it, who knows).
I would have to say it all points to artificially building up Cena as Rock's equal, but I can't imagine it working come WrestleMania to get that crowd split they're angling for. I've never been but I would imagine seats are costly enough it may cut down on the kid demo showing up (which, face it, if they didn't show up to Raw you'd find the pop for Cena dropping like a stone). At least with Raw/SD the seats aren't so high-priced that if the parents don't like it they can power through the show with less impact on the wallet.

It's hilarious that some people think that Rock was ''supposed'' to cut a bad promo to put Cena over. Just accept it,Rock was AWFUL last night, just like I expected.A child can come off with more imitating insults. Just accept it, you don't really know what you're talking about and are being worked. Listen to what you're saying here, it proves it: You're exactly where they WANT you to be. And that's awesome. Makes for a better dynamic. But don’t get up on a high horse over it. You’ve just been drawn into the intended story as we all were. Think about Rock; love him or hate him, he has never been --even in this feud -- that lost out there. He’s an actor; he gave a continuous 3 hour speech to induct his grandfather into the HOF without a single stutter; he’s cut hundreds of promos live in the ring with next to no issues – and suddenly he flubs now when it’s seemingly most important? You’ve taken your side, and that’s the point. But don’t fool yourself, behind the kayfabe, he gave the promo he was SUPPOSED to give. He had the notes written on his hand on purpose to make people question if Cena was really right about him. Dude’s NEVER done that before. It was part of the story. Rock was never meant to come in all barrels blazing with the real-life intent to annihilate Cena. What good would that do for the company’s overall mission to rehab Cena’s character? -- since HE will be the one left behind to carry the ball, no matter what. Hell, I got caught up in the moment too when Cena dropped the bomb, and said, “Oh f*** you, Cena.” Then I smiled and thought to myself: “brilliant.” I’m one of the Rock loyalists, firmly entrenched and unwavering. I’m where they expect people my age to be. I’m playing my role. But I see the story they’re telling and I think it’s pretty impressive. They want a 50/50 split – and just might make it happen (although not in Miami), despite what I thought was a cemented futility. And they need to, if the result of this feud is to bear the intended (and desperately needed) fruit. Putting Cena over at WrestleMania is worthless if Rock’s the overwhelming sentimental favorite. “Congrats, a perceived manufactured guy carrying a soulless era beat the best of the era everyone knew and watched, and now everyone is sad.” They have to make the detractors see Cena as equal and credible for it to truly mean anything. That said, this whole thing ends with each man respecting the other, and saying/thinking: “I was wrong about you. You are the real deal.” They hope that we will say it as well. ...that's why I said ''congrats WWE''.I get that they are trying to make people like Cena, and they achieved that with me.I didn't ignore it. But still, saying that they made Rock cut a bad promo just to make people like Cena is unbelievably hilarious.Sure, they are letting Cena do ''fired up'' promos and have advantage over Rock while he's gone, but that's all the effort for trying to get Cena more liked.Theres's no such thing that Rock cut a bad promo on purpose last night. And by the way, casual fans probably loved that promo.I don't think anyone except smarks are complaining about it.If they truly wanted Rock to cut a bad promo, they would make him struggle hard. I do agree that this will end in peace, though.
