In Kevin Nash's shoot interview with RF Videos he said the plans for WM they were told were Rocky beating Hogan but he and Hall coming out to clean house and the last thing fans see of WM were supposed to be the nWo standing over The Rock and Stone Cold (who would come out to try and save Rock), Austin was also supposed to lose to Hall earlier in the match. Day before Mania, everything was changed because Rock, Austin, Taker, and Jericho among others complained. That does kinda make sense. I assume the nWo would have had a larger purpose before nostalgia pops and injuries curtailed it. That would have put them over as the "poison" Vince originally brought them in as.

That wouldn't have worked. You had the biggest WWE star from the 80's returning to the PPV show that he headlined for its first 9 shows in a city that was fiercely loyal to the WWE. Hogan played the heel schtick to the hilt during that match and the fans cheered him like he was wrestling Paul Orndorff at CNE Stadium. If anything, seeing Rock getting the crap beat out of him after the match might have backfired in terms of intended heat.

Plus, Austin was upset as hell about having to work down the card against Hall in the first place. Good luck trying to get him to agree to job as well, if that scenario had gone down.
I honestly don't think they knew Rock-Hogan was going to blow up as big as it did. Sure, it was big, but the reactions to Hogan were amazing. If Vince had know beforehand what he knew later, I'm sure he would've switched it up.

You have to understand that in 02, we had just come out of the attitude era, which was all about destroying everything hogan represented. WWE didnt know that he'd get a huge face pop (yeah, the fans were hyped up for rock/hogan at the RAW where they had the first confrontation, but they probably just wanted rock to defeat hogan in a one-sided match), especially in 2002.

Since when was HHH/Jericho the most hyped match on the card? I vividly remember Rock/Hogan being the most talked about. No, it didn't get the year long build that Rock/Cena is getting. But, that month build was centered around Rock/Hogan. The posters they used constantly hyped Rock/Hogan.
It's not like Triple H/Jericho match was heavily built since the Rumble. HHH's win was, but most thought Jericho wouldn't make it to X8 with the title. Even when he did, HHH/Stephanie was the focus point.
I agree that the title match should usually go on last. However, there are instances where it shouldn't. This was one of them. HHH/Jericho should have went on right before Hogan/Rock, just like Punk/Jericho should go on right before Cena/Rock this year.

I mean, the original nWo destroying Wrestlemania does kind of make sense storywise. After all, when Hall and Nash were introduced on Nitro as the Outsiders, the storyline implied that they were sent from Vince to destroy WCW. Hogan in his heel turn promo frm Bash at the beach also laid out a slight kayfabe connection to Vince. Vince sends the nWo down south to infiltrate and destroy WCW and then asks them to do likewise to the Island of Misfit Sports Entertainers that was the Attitude-era WWE.
But I don't think it could have been pulled off. Too much could have gone wrong with the story.

It is something I'm not sure we'll ever get the true answer.
