You know, I just realized that today is the 10 year anniversary of Wrestlemania X8 and the anniversary of the most hyped up match for that card. I wonder this, why didn't this match close the show? It was the most hyped up match and the biggest selling point of the show. Yet, they had Chris Jericho vs. Triple H close off the show. Why? Because the bookers felt that Wrestlemania should always end with a title match? Rock vs. Hogan should have at least been the second to last match, not third to last. They could have made that women's match that came in between Rock/Hogan and Triple H/Jericho go on a little lower in the card.
It still baffles me to this day.

I remember hearing that Triple H insisted on his match being the main that year, though I have no idea if that's actually true.

Didn't Jericho say something in his book about people backstage (Vince maybe, I don't know) thinking that nothing should overshadow the titles? Or something to that effect?

I don't remember it being the most hyped match at all. I remember Triple H returning and going after the Undisputed Title while dealing with his ex-wife (with some nobody who walks dogs) to be the most focused on match.
Rock/Hogan was hyped but until the match happened it was playing second fiddle to the title match.
And the Divas went in between so ;in theory) the crowd would have time to recover for the title match.

Damn it really has been 10 years.
As for the question, dont know but it was a bad move not to IMO. Even Jericho said it. I felt that way at Mania 25 too, HBK/Taker should have closed. Good to know WWE learned from that.

Because they were stupid. And as pointed out above, they actually took a second time to learn.

I'm not sure if the match was built up for that long, nor if old Hogan was considered a big threat at the time. This is one of those ex post facto things where people say it should have gone on last after seeing the whole show. Just like WrestleMania 25. Undertaker/HBK had no business going on last since the match was made literally 3 weeks before WrestleMania and the entire premise of it seemed to be "Let's have a good match together" while Triple H/Orton was built up for 4 months and was THE story at the time.

Yeah, as stated above, it's pretty much as baffling as why Taker/HBK at 25 didn't close.

I assumed it was Triple H, but apparently it was a Vince call. Supposedly Triple H and Jericho didn't want to go on last.

I don't even really fault them so much for putting HHH/Jericho on last. The build certainly didn't earn that spot but at least they had the right idea in that a World Title match SHOULD be a main event.
I find Edge/Alberto opening last year far more offensive than HHH/Jericho main eventing ten years ago.

Yeah, as stated above, it's pretty much as baffling as why Taker/HBK at 25 didn't close. Because we may forget it now, but Orton was the hottest thing in wrestling at that time. Trips vs Orton was a match that people wanted to see. The problem was the WWE made it a standard match, instead of an anything goes match. It should have been an all out, nothing held back, fight, but we didn't get that.

There's a DVD interview somewhere (all the DVD documentaries are blended in my head) with a Triple H interview where he says that Rock/Hogan should have went on last, since it was going to be the biggest moment of that WrestleMania.
But blaming Triple H is the standard thing, you know.

The best part of that decision is the finish. Hogan and Rock having a posedown, everyone leaves happy. Perfect way to end the show.

In the earlier one he claims that he insisted the WWE title was so important it had to go on last. Then in a later one he says that he was always against putting the WWE title on last and Rock/Hogan should have gone last. It made a Botchamania episode.

I've seen a YouTube video from two different Triple H interviews that where he contradicts himself. In one interview, he insisted that his match needs to be last to put over the importance of the title. In another interview, he said that he insisted that Rock/Hogan be the main event. I believe the former.

Yep In 2002 on "Triple H: The Game" he claims that he disagreed with Rock/Hogan going last because it would reduce the importance of the world title. In 2011 on "The True Story Of Wrestlemania" he says he and Jericho didn't want to go on last.

The thought that Jericho had a say in the matter is pretty hilarious. That should get the BS meter going in the first place.
