People complained that the guy from Brokeback Mountain and 10 Things I Hate About You was playing Joker.
Then Heath Ledger died.
Then he was one of the greatest actors of all time, and people couldn't wait to see the movie.
Then when people saw it, it was the greatest movie anyone made ever apparently.

So, you're saying Nolan needs to kill Anne Hathaway.....

Maybe if people actually saw Brokeback Mountain and realized how good he was in it, they wouldn't be bitching about it in the first place. The dude had a ton of talent, and he was easily one of the better actors under 30 when he was alive and making rash generalizations based on people waking up when he died is stupid.

Am I alone in noticing this? When they announced Ledger as Joker, folks were PISSED that the Brokeback Mountain/Knight Tale heartthrob would be playing one of the most dastardly villains ever. I know I was. I thought it was a terrible choice.

Speaking of Brokeback Mountain, I've had that DVD for ages and not watched it. Same goes for No Country For Old Men - well, watched about a half hour of that and stopped because I was bored out of my mind, but point is I've not finished it.

I still see people online complaining about Ledger's portrayal because it wasn't the Joker they wanted.

People crapped on Ledger being chosen but I think what won people over was the great promotion they did for it by doing cryptic message of the Joker before anybody had seen what he looked like. Here people saw the images BEFORE the promotions started to be kicked into high gear.

IIRC, a lot of people did in fact crap on it, but, upon it's release, a lot of them shut up. Was it hype or deserved praise? That's not for me to say. But, I hope a similar thing will happen with the "Bane Hate" and whatnot.

I think Nolan rarely disapoint but it doesn't help that most people don't have a lot of love for Bane to begin with.

Know what just struck me? Pretty much everyone complaining about Ledger described him as the "Brokeback Mountain" guy, which carried the rather ugly undertone of people not wanting a "gay" Joker....yet a number of critically acclaimed Batman stories (Serious Night on Serious Earth, the Arkham games) have clearly presented the Joker as having a little bit of a thing for Batman, even if it's just another mindgame. No one complains about those portrayals, though.
I also never got the whole "Least faithful Joker EVER" argument, when the Joker is quite possibly the most chameleonic character in comics. There's been dozens of different takes on him, and each one can really just be seen as another layer of insaity or facet of his personality.

People complained quite a bit when Ledger was first cast, and when the initial images of what he looked like came out.
But people shut up a lot as more images and info leaked, and definitely after Ledger died. By the time the movie was out, curiosity (and dead actoritis) eclipsed whatever complaining was going on out there.

If I'm remembering my timeline correctly, the first trailer for the film came out before Ledger died....and many people said "OK, maybe this Joker IS going to be good after all!"

I'll admit I was skeptical when ledger was cast, and not even because of Brokeback or any of his other films. Rather, I dislike Hollywood's record of casting beautiful people to play characters that are supposed to be repulsive. But I did not doubt Ledgers talent as an actor at that point, and I think it proved that Nolan knew what he was doing when he cast him, which is why all the complaints about Hardy and Hathaway irk me. On that note, while Bane's mask is a little weird looking, I don't think it's bad either. I get the feeling it is meant to remind people of the face huggers from Alien, and Hannibal the Cannibal's mask from Silence of the Lambs. And I also think it is meant to look a little like some sort of torture device. Not exactly bad concepts.

The complaining continued even after the screening. Because then it turned into "you only liked him as Joker because he died herp derp". See?

I was here when that all happened and let me tell you, until Heath Ledger died..........people were having complaints about Ledger as The Joker. Then there was hope that his final full role wouldnt be terrible.
Of course it was made even better when we saw the film and we saw that while the Joker in The Dark Knight was somewhat different from the Joker in the comics, he did such a good job in making that character scary that we were able to forgive the differences.
Which is why I will keep silent on Bane and Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises, because while they may not be full versions of the comic book characters............we could get a good alternative version of the character.

Am I the only one who didn't think he was THAT different from the comics outside of his skin not being bleached? I think he did a perfect job (though I still prefer Mark Hamill :-P).

I still complain, but not really about the casting or the acting, I can't fault that, but the version of the Joker, in fact, the version of pretty much everyone that Nolan gives me isn't really what I want from a Batman film.
They are good films, I own them, will see the third and likely buy that as well, but that doesn't negate the fact that I am very glad Nolan is ending his hold on the franchise and that next time round they are apparently going for a bit more in the way of 'fantasy.'

i just remember Neil Gaiman posting on his twitter "i quite enjoyed the dark knight, i dont see an issue with heath's joker at all, i thought it was brilliantly written and more like the 90's joker"
which of corse he then got bombed by people saying things like "YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT COMIC BOOKS!!!#!@$@#%@%%%!"
