Perks of Being a Wallflower was really, really good. I recommend it. Next on my "to see" list is Argo, which I fully expect to be amazing.

Chasing Mavericks, the other new wide release was at #12 with $2.2M, which is the 9th worst opening in box office history for a movie that is released in over 2,000 theaters.
Also, Skyfall grossed $77.7M already overseas.

I'd never heard of chasing mavericks. Looking it up and seeing that it's a surfing biography, I'm not surprised it's doing poorly. That's an incredibly niche market.

But there is an entirely different issue at work with this bomb. The marketing department didn't care.

As expected. It's cheap to make, and they make money. This Your average made-for-tv probably costs more to make than a Paranormal Activity. As long as you aren't paying excessive amounts for marketing you'll make money. Reality is that horror movies and family flicks offer the most consistent return on investment.

How is John Carter not on this list? Because they went for worldwide box office, not domestic. If this were domestic alone, Carter would be 2nd on this list; however, because of the international release, it earned ~$288 million on the $250 million budget, enough to keep it off the list. That also explains why Battleship isn't on the list.
