I know there's a big anti-Cena sentiment on this board, but what about Randy Orton? I haven't seen people talk about him much. I like him quite a bit even though he's one-dimensional, but I haven't been watching wrestling very long* so maybe I just haven't had enough time to get tired of him.
*I didn't grow up with anyone who watched, so I started in highschool on a whim after seeing comercials for RAW on USA a lot.

his gimmick makes his promos boring, and his wrestling matches for the most part great.

Orton, for me, has been a roller coaster. WHen he started he was 9 shades of generic (the blue chipper with the overdrive as a finisher) who I had issues with because of his well-known conviction for desertion. I started to see improvement in him with Evolution, but the face turn was painfully bad.
The McMahon feud started off with big promise for both him and the rest of Legacy but derailed into meh. Then he got white hot, and I though ok, this could be his time, but he's lost something to where the "crazy Randy" part is cartoonish and mixing it with standard babyface mannerisms has hurt. "Smilin' Randy, the Happiest Sociopath You'll Ever Meet" just seems so....awkward.

Oh yeah I'm sure I'm gonna be sick of that some day soon. He has such a beautiful voice though so I still kind of like that part currently. |

I think the best way for him to work as a face would be to have him as the face purely because he's against the heel, get rid of almost all other facey characteristics, but make his craziness slightly more complex. |

Frankly, I think it could be saved by mixing in one of my all time favorite gimmicks, but treat it as a face move. They've established his character as being unstable, on the edge and whatnot. So, why not give hi the Waylon Mercy mannerisms? Smile when he comes out, handshake, high 5 the fans and all that, but when the bell rings, he just tries to kill people. Not Festus levels of "ooohhh, look Goerge, a BELL!" but I think you get what I mean.

Unfortunately for Orton, he will never be recognized as the great wrestler he actually is. People are too bias on him being the "superman" of Smackdown to actually see his ability and just say he was carried by his opponent, which is total bullshit. Orton put over MArk Henry of all people and aided Henry in a good title match in NOC. Orton may not be a submission artist or do flashy moves, but the man is a great wrestler and I think he deserves more credit, especially from the smarks, for his work.

Personally, I think the lesson to be learned from this and his face turn in 2004 is that some people are just best left as heels. He just does heel so naturally, and it's so great! But when he's a face, it's just not the same. |

It's a case of presentation hurting a product. Orton IS a good worker, does carry his own, has come a LONG way since he started, and all that. He's no longer just Rest Hold Randy, King of the Chinlock. THe issue is this. He IS the Superman of Smackdown, even after putting Henry over huge, because everything else is "Randy wins every match, but the announcers scream how even things are". It's not Orton's fault, he doesn't book the matches, but the way it is presented does hurt him. |

He seems to have a reputation for killing ratings as Champion, though I am unsure on how accurate that is.

I think the problem with trying to turn him back heel is like everyone said, he's not that much different a face as he was when he was a heel, and people still cheer for him. So the question is, what could Orton possibly do now to get the crowd to boo him?

I've never been a big fan but my tolerance of him has had it's ups and downs.
I thought he was decent when he debuted. Loved his RNN skits when he was injured, and was interested in him when he returned as a heel and joined Evolution. I was digging his Legend Killer gimmick but wasn't too high on his ring work, but his feud with Mick Foley was one of my favorite things of all time. Their match at Backlash 2004 was my personal favorite match of that year.
Then he had his terrible face turn and I couldn't stand him for a while. I started warming up to him again when he turned heel and kind of wanted to see him end Taker's streak at WM 21, but in hindsight I'm glad it didn't happen. After the feud with Taker I basically couldn't stand him for years. He was consistently boring on the mic and in the ring.
Then from the time he had the match with Punk at WM 27 onwards I've been warming up to him again. Especially since the move to Smackdown. He's put on great matches with Christian, including a MOTY candidate at Over The Limit and even worked well with Mark Henry. He seems to have suddenly improved by leaps and bounds in the ring and if it continues I'll love having him in the main event for as long as possible.

He's the most boring wrestler on the roster to me, primarily because he never loses, but also his drawn out, predictable offence, and reliance on rest holds.
I also still hold a grudge against him for ruining my one chance to see Edge wrestle because he was too much of a prat to leave a hotel room without trashing it.

I haven't cared about Randy Orton since he was in Evolution. He just bores me to tears and I hate his current character.

Gimmick wise he hasn't been as boring since the start of the year, and since 'Mania 27 he's been having great matches night in night out. I often forget about him when fantasy booking due to him really not being the number one face albeit, but that's not his fault, the company not having many upper midcarders who can stand in the main event (kayfabe wise) is the issue there. Cena tends to face all the main guys, Randy gets the layer just under.
I have a soft spot for him given how insanely brilliant he was during his Legend Killer run, the best bit about One Night Stand 2 was Orton wandering out legitimately not giving a crap about anyone talking to him in the aisle.
Plus he's over like all Hell, whether he loses viewers or whatever (I don't really care about anyone's viewing experience but mine) doesn't matter to me, when he comes out he gets massive pops. Live fans love him, and I imagine at 'Mania 28 (my next WWE show) I'll be cheering for him too.
Match wise: 8/10
Gimmick wise: 6/10 (neither boring, nor brilliant, but not as boring as it was a year ago at all)
Overness: 8/10
