The gimmick was probably because they had no intention of him wrestling. If he was PS Hayes, every question would be "When do you wrestle again?"

I remember when they finally came out and acknowledged him as Michael Hayes. It on Raw in late '97 or early '98. For no reason at all, they started showing clips of his Freebirds days and talked about how before he was Dok Hendrix, he was Michael Hayes.
He came out to the ring to Bad Street USA, said a few words ....... and was then destroyed by Kane.

Is it just me or does he look like a tool right here? I can't tell if he looks like a more awesome Perez Hilton or not.

I thought they started calling him Michael Hayes again when he started managing the Hardy Boyz.

I remember meeting Dok Hendrix(who was subbing for Mr. Perfect, along with Ahmed Johnson) at an autograph signing when I was around 10 years old. Being a stupid kid, I thought I was so smart because I knew that he was really Michael Hayes. So when it was my turn to get his autograph, I ask him quietly like it was a big secret "do you still talk to Jimmy 'Jam' Garvin?". He was really cool about it and said "yea kid, all the time!" I marked out big time because I felt like I knew this big secret that no one else knew, and he just confirmed it.

I'm a Texan and, aside from Yankees, NO ONE considers it 'The South'. The South = Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Arkansas, Kentucky, South Carolina, North Carolina, and I think that might be it. Southwest = Arizona, New Mexico, El Paso. Texas is its own region. I don't think using the term Yankee is helping your argument.

I wouldn't say that. With so many great contributions to sports, the arts and culture in general, there's a lot to be proud of. If I were from Texas, I'd be exceedingly proud. Same for if I was from Ohio. Nobody should ever be proud of being from that shithole, Ohio.

There is one question in my mind. When was his last appearance as Dok Hendrix? In 1999, he started going by Michael "PS" Hayes even in the Free For All shows. Was it ever acknowledged that Dok Hendrix and Michael Hayes were one and the same on TV?

Was it ever acknowledged that Dok Hendrix and Michael Hayes were one and the same on TV? When he became the Hardyz manager for a short time. They interviewed him, he said his name was not "Doc Hendrix" and that it was "Michael..." then was attacked. from then on, he was called Michael Hayes.

Because it's the WWF Way. They create their own. Remember how Kerry Von Erich became the Texas Tornado? To be fair, that was kind of a nickname. They almost always called him Kerry Von Erich too. This is more like how Ricky Steamboat was called The Dragon in 1991, and never Ricky Steamboat. It was Vince wanting to do his own thing with living breathing people and ignoring anything he wanted to ignore about them. Like, their names. Vince didn't create the Freebirds, so he wouldn't acknowledge Hayes as Hayes (until the Attitude Era, when the smarks working there did away with the Dok Hendrix persona)

I heard that Hayes is actually a Philly boy, not a southern boy.

The moment I mentioned happened a year or two later and was basically the WWF saying "Okay, fine. You got us. He's Michael Hayes."

I always liked Michael Hayes as Doc Hendrix. He fit right in with the corny-ness that was the new generation. I don't think Michael PS Hayes would've fit in. He was too associated with WCW and other Southern Promotions. The New Generation was VERY New York/Northeast oriented. And I actually really liked the Entertainment Tonight-style Action Zone he had with Todd Pettengill. My basic rule of thumb: If you joined the Confederacy, you're the South. Deal with it, Texas. Oh, and this.

I forget the year, but I have a Raw magazine where they did an article about the Freebirds and they showed of pic of Hayes getting his hair cut and he talked about how that was the hardest thing he ever did when he became Doc Hendrix
