I loved the signing of this guy as a commentator...he was a great talker, southern wrestling icon, Freebird with top name recognition. He would've been awesome as a commentator as Michael PS Hayes
Instead they cut his hair, call him Dok, and rip out whatever charisma he has by making him a Kevin Kelly clone essentially
And what's even more strange was that the WWF was making a hard push for southern audiences at that time...maybe they feared WCW was pulling too far away with the south...so we got Sparky Plugg, Godwinns, Lawler, Jeff Jarrett and the whole country music angle, Smoking Guns
Hayes would've been perfect as commentator...coming down the ramp before events to Freebird, Rebel Flag robes etc

The WWF brain trust were not firing on all cylinders in the mid 90's. They were waaaaaaaayyyy behind the times and were still sticking to the cartoon characters of the 80's after they had already run out of good ideas and the fans were burned out on the concept. Always remember that the WWF did not usher in the Attitude Era, the Attitude Era was thrust upon them.

Hayes achieved the large portion of his notoriety in places other than the WWF. The Freebirds did stop for a cup of coffee earlier, but all their notable angles and matches happened in other companies. Vince has always been against wanting to use history from other companies in his own, and wanted to market people with a gimmick WWF could own. Perhaps Hayes knew this and that's why they went with Dok Hendrix as he didn't want the Freebirds to become copyrighted by the WWF at the time... (couldn't blame him, he could've been with the company for a month then fired for all he knew.... had he known how big a part of the company he'd play behind the scenes, we may have seen something different.)

Because it's the WWF Way. They create their own.
Remember how Kerry Von Erich became the Texas Tornado?

Sorry, I can't see Michael "P.S." Hayes giving us the run-down of recent goings-on in Slam Jam or hosting "WWF Blast Off" on WGN. WWF made the right decision.

They acknowledge his real name (well, famous name in KVE's case) but the push and promotion was on the nickname/gimmick.

I considered Texas to be the Midwest more than being the South. For the record, nobody in the Midwest thinks this, and when we hear it, we find it baffling. Nothing against Texas, I got lots of love for the state and its numerous contributions. It's just not the midwest.

The Smoking Gunns weren't appealing to southern audiences. They were billed from Texas. I've always considered Texas to be part of the South. My basic rule of thumb: If you joined the Confederacy, you're the South. Deal with it, Texas.
