Anyone bother with Avengers Arena? It really is an awful premise....... Poorly timed release for a book that glorifies in killing children, but I cant deny that it was actually rather well written. The new Arcade is worth seeing more of. {Spoiler} Mettle getting blown apart at the end was a bit of a wow moment

The new Arcade is worth seeing more of. I've been an Arcade mark for many years. I don't know why, but the gimmick was cool to me. So this was just a wonderful book. {Spoiler}The superpowers are a surprising touch, though it makes sense, if they're geniunely his, he'd use them against kids and not X-Men/Wolverine/Spider-Man/adult heroes who could easily overpower and kill him. So this leads me to believe he's being controlled/enhanced by some Grandmaster/Collector/cosmic gamesman type.

Grandmaster would make A LOT of sense.
It is a game after all.
It would also fit in with the 'it's all VR' theory doing the rounds

Grandmaster would make A LOT of sense. It is a game after all. It would also fit in with the 'it's all VR' theory doing the rounds Both seem kind of a gyp, though VR makes better sense of the 2 (Murderworld can easily do that kind of thing). The fact that it's an ongoing series also presents the issue of what the ultimate scheme here is. I doubt Marvel would launch an ongoing with such a finite conclusion looming... The more I think about this series, the more my scalp hurts from scratching my head so much. Blargh, I'm just gonna enjoy Arcade killing kids.

I hate the very premise of that book. "he kills children take him seriously!" is just as dumb as "Dr. Light is a rapist, take him seriously!".
as a big fan of Avengers Academy the whole thing comes off to me as a middle finger.
"it's all VR" = the inevitable retcon when someone realizes how horrible an idea for a story this is. the fact that Marvel even went through with publishing something so mean spirited in spite of all the grief they got is nothing short of pathetic.

Lots of great classic stuff coming up; IDW's Artist Edition of John Byrne's F4, a third Blondie volume from the 30's by LoAC, more classic Barks duck stories, and Hermes Press is putting out the George Wunder works on Terry & the Pirates, to which only myself and people who are 80 said "holy crap!" out loud to.

I'm going to assume that the art in the calendar is just NOW! art that we've already seen. You would be correct!

The Byrne stuff from IDW is something I might pick up. I love his run on that title and argue that aside from the original Lee/Kirby run and the recent Hickman run, it's unquestionably the best that book has ever been.

See, I have no real connection to a lot of these younger heroes, and I'm an Arcade mark. Not crazy about killing them all these kids, but - and I hate to say it - as long as they don't off Darkhawk (who BTW is back on Earth now and presumably not being chased by Shi'ar after being framed for killing Lilandra in WAR OF KINGS....), this series doesn't really make my blood boil. See, there's GOTTA be a twist to all this that undoes whatever the story on the surface seems to be. The premise itself is too finite a one to warrant an ongoing.....

I'd forgotten that the Shi'ar were after Darkhawk. You would think they would be after him, not to mention other Rapters, and nothing Arcade could put up would stop that.
Just another forgotten plot line

Just another forgotten plot line Yeah. Doesn't bode well for the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and NOVA relaunches, where Bendis and Loeb say they'll take Abnett & Lanning's runs into account (Loeb greatly praised DnA, in particular). Meanwhile, Avengers Arena #2 comes out this week. I know Marvel shipping is fast and furious, but this is incredible.....

Loeb can stick it.
I dont care what reason he gives for resurrecting his son as a 'new' character, if it isn't Rich Ryder as Nova, that whole book can take a running jump.
I'm surprised they aren't postponing the kid killing book, considering....

See, there's GOTTA be a twist to all this that undoes whatever the story on the surface seems to be. The premise itself is too finite a one to warrant an ongoing..... but that's just it; YOU may not be familiar with the characters, but Runaways was a huge success for Marvel and Avengers Academy has a lot of fans too. how would you feel if you spent the last couple of years growing to love these characters only to see them put into a series where they're all killed off as if they never even mattered? what the hell does that tell your fans about what you think of the new characters you've introduced over the last few years? if all you see is "hur dur they weren't in a movie so they deserve to die horribly" then why the hell should I give a s*** about any new book you do? as for Darkhawk, it's a crying shame Marvel never did anything with him after War of Kings, his plotline was really interesting and he's a favorite of mine going back to when I was a kid. I thought that'd lead to a renewed push for him like what happened to Nova, but I guess it wasn't meant to be. Loeb can stick it. I dont care what reason he gives for resurrecting his son as a 'new' character, if it isn't Rich Ryder as Nova, that whole book can take a running jump. I'm surprised they aren't postponing the kid killing book, considering.... I just think the whole Nova situation is sad. they bring back Starlord but they don't bring back Nova even though he was right there with Starlord. it's just pathetic watching a once-respected writer beat everyone over the head with his personal grief at the expense of a great character. it was really sad that Sam Loeb died but at this point whenever Jeph brings up how awful it was that his kid died AGAIN for the 5 millionth time I just wish someone would tell him to shut the hell up about it. and I think that's telling that he's polluted his own son's memory like that.

So, Amazing Spider-Man 700 is going to be $7.99...sheesh. Fantastic Four #600 cost that much but it was also 100 pages of original story. That I had no problem with. I'd imagine this is going to be the usual cram a bunch of short Spideys into it affair.
