Just two years ago (or a year and some change, to be accurate), Kaval was released from the WWE, under somewhat ambiguous circumstances; the official word is that he asked for his release, he's recently said they booted him. At the same time, his fellow ROH alumni CM Punk and Daniel Bryan were taking control of the Nexus (for whatever that was worth) and not doing anything notable in the midcard, respectively. Fast-forward to now: CM Punk is the number two face in the company, while Daniel Bryan, after only a year and a half in the company, is the World Heavyweight Champion, as well as a former Money in the Bank winner. All three of them started out extremely similarly: All three made names for themselves in the independents before being signed to the WWE. All three were later sent to developmental for varying amounts of time (Punk spent the most time there, while Bryan was barely there for a cup of coffee), before coming to the main roster. Hell, all three of them had similar gimmicks, too: they were all treated like rookies by their fellow Superstars, but for the most part, they were presented like "wink wink, nudge nudge," rookies in name only; all three of them were acknowledged to be exceptionally talented and well learned.
So, bottom line: Three similar stars, three very different stories. Why is it that Punk and Bryan are where they are while Kaval's no longer in the company? Could it be who they knew? Were they simply willing to take more than he was? Or is it just happenstance?

The answer to the question, to put it bluntly, is Kaval.

Easy, Ki wasn't the guy they wanted to win NXT so when he did it a) left them with nothing to do with him and b) pissed off creative to not even bother with him.

His ego and the fact that he (and the IWC for the most part) couldn't wait for him to get a push. He (and they) had to have it RIGHT NOW.

A face Rey Mysterio. WWE already had one small guy the fans were behind.

At least we'll always have memories of Kaval and Laycool. And I'm serious; they worked surprisingly well together.

It's simple really. They set themselves up for failure. They let the fans vote for the winner of NXT Season 2. When they realized that Kaval would win they did everything they could to keep him down: pairing him with Laycool; having him get beat like a drum; having Cole bury him on commentary. And despite all that he still got the majority of the votes. And then to spite them they had him get beaten up even after he won.
So naturally they had to punish the fans for daring to support someone that they didn't want to push and proceeded to bury him to hell and back. Guy got a single fluke win once he got to Smackdown.
So yeah, they sure showed those fans. They showed them to the point that they didn't come back for Season 3 and forced the show to be moved to WWE.com. Honestly, who wants to watch a show like that when the winner is destined to be nothing more than a jobber or a non entity at best? Heck, even Wade Barrett fell into that pit after the initial Nexus angle.
If only we had done what they told us and voted for Michael McGillicutty or Alex Riley like they wanted then maybe NXT wouldn't be a joke nowadays.

I heard we worked too stiff, they wanted him to tone it down, he was an asshole about it and they told him he should ask for his release.
It's too bad but he's probably better off in the indies anyway. I loved watching him in ROH.
eta- and holy crap if they did intentionally bury him--which I wouldn't put past them, f*** those guys. I do remember wondering why it seemed they were constantly out to humiliate him. Even if you didn't like his wrestling style or thought he was small, the guy was so freaking cool...everything about him was original. I would've loved to see a badass Kaval challenging DB for the world title. They should make those world titles rewards for wrestling skill/character anyway, not just the sheer size of someone...and I can't stand Alex Riley or McGillicutty serves them right!

With the way things were going at the time for guys on his level and the fact it was clear they didn't want him to win the show he won thanks to fan support, I have to say it's fair enough that he basically told them to stick their job when it was clear they had no plans for him. The guy was obviously happier wrestling.

Yeah.....I'm sure having the people the fans hate the most run him down was an effort to make the fans not care about him..... Because I know when Michael Cole hates something, the fans hate it too.

They decided to make him a total jobber. I can't really say 100% if its because they never wanted him to win NXT, but that seems logical to me.
When I saw Chavo Guerrero beat him clean on Smackdown, I was actually stunned.

It wasn't just Michael though. Josh Mathews even badmouthed him a few times too. Heck, when both were asked who was the strongest competitor in NXT they both said Alex Riley and when asked about the weakest they both said Kaval.

He should have been a little more patient. I think it's pretty telling that he hasn't shown up in TNA on a permanent basis.
I watched that entire season of NXT, and he was definitely not buried. The Laycool pairing was genius and let him show a part of his personality he never got to before. And guess what? He was good at humorous stuff.
I wish he would have used that title short for the world title, but he wouldn't have won it anyway. And he at least had that really good match with Ziggler.
He should have stuck around. He wouldn't be on D-Bry's level, but he'd have been a midcard or tag team champ by now for sure.

They buried him. Simple as that. Nothing to do with the fabled "paying of dues". Despite winning the fans vote on NXT, and easily being one of the best in-ring superstars they had, the WWE didn't see him as anything more than a jobber. And when it became obvious to the WWE that Kaval wanted more than just being enhancement talent, they decided it was best to release him.
