I do have a tiny bit of sympathy for Capcom, they clearly put the effort in but always do something to piss everybody off.
It's like Resident Evil 6, they tried to please everybody by offering three different campaigns but that just resulted in everybody being disappointed.
Then I think of their shady business practices and them shutting down Clover Studios and my sympathy melts away.

Either this guy is a delusional fool that's woefully unknowledgeable about action games or is a brilliant satirist.

I saw the title and thought they were talking about Run DMC. I was trying to figure out what the hell was going on.

I think what really ticked the fans off more than new Dante's appearance was the way Capcom/Ninja Theory responded to the criticism, which reeked of "We don't give a shit".
Then they do this:
It's kind of a slap in the face. And then they end up releasing "Classic Dante" as one of the 4 skins in the costume pack DLC that just dropped last week.
I still say the game would have been better received if had nothing to do with Devil May Cry.

I still say the game would have been better received if had nothing to do with Devil May Cry. If they wanted the publicity, they should just have made it a spin off and named it something like "Devil Will Cry." And named the new main chracter Will. ...Yes.

The only man ever to not have a problem with this game. Add me to that list I loved DmC and I believe he's right. Not a right way to put it as such but yeah. I can happily write an essay as to why DMC needed a reboot and why the game itself is good among some glitches.

Perhaps if they would have actually marketed the game (here in the states atleast) it would have sold more. I'm not sure I've seen a single commercial for it.
As someone who hasn't played it yet, this game looks fun. It seems like another above average game like Sleeping Dogs, and I think the only reason it gets crapped on so much is because Dante got a reboot. I liked the old Dante, but he's not Mario or Megaman, even though a lot of fans have seemingly put him up there as one of the best characters ever. He was just a guy who did a lot of cool s***.

I think gaming journalism gets an undeserved bad rap but WAOH that is bad. Blaming fans for the death of a franchise on the fans is NEVER a good idea and is pretty much always wrong (if they find it bad, it means the creators failed to connect with their audience, not that the audience is evil). And it's quite ironic that they say that when the truth is Capcom destroyed the brand out of spite for the fanbase, like they did with Megaman and they're doing with Resident Evil. Not only did they make a completely unnecessary reboot of a franchise the fans loved, but they made it a blatant excuse to make the lead designer's self-insert fanfic fantasies true, going as far as to make the main character look like him and then just to make sure we get the message, have him disdain his original form. He might as well just say "screw you and your expectations, fans! *I* know how these games should be and what you should like, and it ain't anything that was done so far!". You see, maybe the thing is after trying to make them pay twice for the same game with Street Fighter X Tekken, downright insulting them with... anything Megaman-related in the last couple years and ignoring them by stubbornly making the Resident Evil more and more generic, maybe the fans simply have had enough and decided to stop giving their hard earned money to a company that has no respect for them. Say what you will about EA but at least they don't outright troll their fanbase. I mean Hell, even the WWE eventually realized that many fans didn't like Cena and made it part of his story rather than telling them they should just shut up and smile. It's especially bad because it comes down to "Why aren't you buying this game that you don't like?" The fans aren't buying the game because they don't like it. It's a good game, but it has nothing to do with what made them fans of the series in the first place so it's alienating them. THANK YOU! So many people seem to have a problem understanding that long-time fans aren't too thrilled about being told to forget everything they liked about it. Just so you guys know, the reporter said that, not Capcom i think. It is unprofessional to the journalist. Fair point, but considering how Capcom themselves have been acting towards their fans lately... let's just say their ghost is looming over this article. I lovehow some defenders accuse that the only reason is the hair. like th fans do not want just because of the hair Especially weird considering I've never heard anyone complain about Dante's hair specifically. His overall stupid looks, yes, but his hair alone? No.

The complaints about Dante's new look were really common around the time the game was first revealed at E3. But the complaints about the game since the demo came out had a lot more to do with how bad the game was. Anyone who thinks that people currently don't want to play this game because of New Dante isn't paying attention.

Whether it was good or bad or not is pretty much immaterial at this point, since Ninja Theory went out of their way to troll the fanbase as much as they possibly could through out the entire development.
Because, obviously, passive-aggressively hating on the people you're going to have to sell your product to is Capitalism at its Finest.
Considering the dialogue, it should have been called "F*** YOU!, the game", with the double meaning that it was also a "F*** YOU!" to the people who didn't want Ninja Theory coming within 3 galaxies of that franchise.
Capcom's been farming their Japanese Franchises out to Western Developers for a while now (Dead Rising 2, Lost Planet 3), and they're not the only ones.
Hardcore fans of Japanese-made games and Japanese publishers are loathe to see it, and Ninja Theory were basically defiantly flinging poop in everyone's faces over it.

A game starring Will Smith slaying a bunch of demons while saying cheesy one-liners is a game I'd be willing to play.

And do you guys want to know something about Ninja Theory? They're really not good developers. They can create an amazing looking game (shit, look at Enslaved. That's just amazing to look at) but gameplay is iffy at best for them and repetitive as shit at worst.
They're also yet to master having a camera between this and Enslaved which is something that is unforgivable for a 3D action game.

This thread is the first I have heard of people not liking this game after they tried it. I have been hearing mostly rave reviews from people and critics (it has an 85% on gamerankings right now). This game has been very well received, it just hasn't sold. And I bet it has a lot to do with time of release and lacking of advertising.
Also, a fan of the series, they either needed to end it or reboot it. The reboot's story shouldn't have been what was basically a rehash of the past games though.

It just has nothing to do with the series at all and thus fans of it aren't buying it. So fans of the series didn't buy it because it doesn't have the things in the past game that appealed to them. The game was very well critically received, but the public didn't like the game much. The game is averaging 5.8 on reader's reviews over at gamefaqs, for example, and 3.9 over at metacritic. www.metacritic.com/game/playstation-3/dmc-devil-may-cryDid the series need a reboot? Maybe. But if you are going to make the new series completely unlike the old one, don't call it by the same name. It has a completely different tone, gameplay has nothing to do with it, so...yeah. It was received well critically because it's a good game. The public hated it because the developers went out of their way to alienate their fanbase and still try to treat the game as part of the series. It was just dumb marketing all around.

In pretty much any thread around the internet discussing review scores for this game, accusations of reviewers being paid off will fly fast and furious. I have no guess on that one way or the other. A lot of the hate for this game comes because of what sort of Franchise this is. People have expectations from a franchise that was built on being a demanding, punishing, Japanese Modern Action game. That's what built up the series its fanbase. Contracting out to a Western developer known for bland, undemanding gameplay was strike one. The aesthetic changes accompanying the reboot were strike two. Ninja Theory's defiant 'Yeah? Well F*** YOU." attitude every step of the way when they realized they'd pretty much pissed off EVERYBODY was strike three.

I'm denying the game is good, actually. I think Ninja Theory is a severely overrated studio that only succeeds at making inferior knock-offs of better games. They're not glaringly terrible, and there's worse games you can play, but they're serviceable or adequate at best.
The only difference between DmC and any of their other games is that this one is an officially sanctioned inferior knock-off. But I think if I played this as an original IP, my reaction would be "Wannabe DMC except not as good."
Adam Sessler's review perfectly represents how a lot of us who don't like the game feel about it. (Possible language).

I can only imagine when Devil May Cry is made into a game, which is based on this latest DmC starring Channing Tatum.
...Don't laugh. Hollywood.
