As the 'reports' come out of the WWE telling talent to step up now that Cena's hurt the thoughts ran across my mind that RYBACK WAS THE GUY. He was a legit #2 babyface in the company for a while. This was around the time when Punk was heel and Bryan was in Team Hell No. Ryback was the guy.
He was right there. After a while he started losing a lot on ppv and was then turned heel. But right before that when he first clotheslined Cena that time on Raw. The crowd was so hype for that. Even before that when Cena was hurt and Ryback clotheslined Punk after Cena threw him back into the ring.
It seems as though they didn't want to push both Ryback and Daniel Bryan as top faces at the same time. But what harm would there be in Bryan kicking fools on Raw and Ryback chasing Del Rio on Smackdown(or Ziggler when he was heel). The talk of talent 'stepping up' makes me think back to how over Ryback was and how him and Daniel Bryan could have been the top 2 faces instead of just Bryan groomed for the spot. I like Bryan, but I'm just saying.
Those "FEED ME MORE!" chants used to be so friggin loud. Man Ryback should have AT LEAST gotten revenge on the Shield. I thought for sure him and Bryan would be two of the guys to take them down and give them their first loss but Ryback wasn't even in the equation.

He sucks. He sucked as Skip Sheffield(although that clothesline was badass) and he sucks as Ryback. No originality to him whatsover. He's like a combonation of Goldberg and RVD.

If it wasn't for Rocky having a guaranteed title shot at the Royal Rumble, I think there would have been a real possibility of RyBack winning the WWE Championship. But because of that match, the WWE was caught between a rock and a hard place - either halt Ryback's momentum in order for Punk vs. Rock to happen, have RyBack vs. Rock which (probably) wouldn't have drawn as well, or have RyBack win the title and immediately drop it back to Punk, ending the year long title reign which was a big selling point for Punk/Rock.

Not a fan.
From a business standpoint though, I think WWE messed up with him big time. I don't like the guy but even I would have had to push him given how much Feed Me More caught on.
His current bully gimmick is probably the most entertaining thing he's ever done.

I know a lot of folks didn't/don't really like him but I think it would be cool if they were pushing a guy like Daniel Bryan on Raw and a guy like Ryback on Smackdown. Two completely different baby faces with different body types, different movesets, different fanbases maybe but both men are over. BOTH babyfaces having chants that were over "YES YES YES!" and "FEED ME MORE!"
Just seems like a waste considering how over Ryback was. Before Daniel Bryan's push this year, I legit thought Ryback would be the next guy at the top. I mean he was right there on the cusp of being the top babyface.
Kids liked him too, plus he had a bunch of fun adlibs and catchphrases.
"FEED ME MORE!"
"FINISH IT!"
"STOOPID!"
"I HIT HARD!" <---Was less common but still.

I've never been a fan of his, but Al Snow's story about rice krispie treats is hilarious.

It was the combination of getting a title shot at a PPV with a guarenteed HiAC main event and having an already booked main event three months later
WWE and Ryback may have been better served letting someone like Orton have the shot at Hell in a Cell

He's not the most original character but my inner mark loved seeing him wreck random guys. I think he'd fit right into the WHC scene.

Ryback wrecking Presidential jobbers was fun, Ryback as a legit threat to guys like Cena/Punk/whoever not so much. He would probably have been better served battling with Alberto.

I never liked Ryback too much but I'm kind of interested to see where they're going to go with this new bully gimmick. Hopefully Ryback isn't relegated to background segments and he can get in a few (good) matches as well, otherwise I don't know what the hell WWE is doing with him right now.

I think WWE just can't bring themselves to accept that they'll eventually need a replacement for Cena that's not just temporary. I imagine no matter how the Bryan / McMahons thing goes, when Cena gets back Bryan will have a random, nonsense heel turn too, just because history has shown they do that any time a potential longterm top face that isn't Cena arises.

For a talentless hoss, he wasn't hated too much around here. The guy was successful at what he did and the company screwed up.

They blew it. I understand why they put themselves in the situation but they had something and blew it bad with him. He could have easily been the number two guy but was a victim of the perfect storm of booking nightmares.

Heel Ryback has had his moments, like the ambulance promo where he threatened to kill Cena & the audience. His bully character is great right now. But I go back and watch videos from when he was at his hottest as a face and it frustrates me to see how they threw it all away.

Ryback was never a serious replacement as a main eventer. He's just not good enough in the ring or in any serious angle to do much in the long-term.

I never thought he was "talentless". Limited? Sure. But that's fine if he can market himself well, which he did.
Should he have turned heel? Nope. That was a stupid stupid move. The guy was over, and no matter how you want to look at it. He had a good look, although he certainly shouldn't have been THE top face or anything, he certainly filled a face role we haven't seen in some time. Any more, we have faces fill the same roles over and over, and not enough guys who can be one-dimensional and make it work. Ryback made it work. Would it have remained over long term? That's hard to say. But what I do know is they cut him at the knees at the first opportunity when they needed to feed someone new to Cena.
Then after that, they start jobbing him out left and right. That was stupid enough, but if you're going to go into something, you may as well go all the way.
Unfortunately, I guess they felt he needed a big win. Instead of maybe giving him one over some big name, they give it to him over Jericho, which is about as big of a win as you would have gotten in 1994 against Bob Backlund. No one cares. So does this help him out? Well...since then, he hasn't done shit, so it's all for nothing. I hate to say that the losing streak may have helped him, but it may have gotten him back to being a face instead of a totally boring heel.
I'm not even a fan of the guy really, but it just seems like a wasted opportunity to make money.
