Today the Braves are announcing a move to a new stadium in Cobb County (next county over) starting in 2017 once their 20-year lease at Turner Field expires.
It'll be in Cumberland, GA at I-75 and I-285 and cost $672 million.

So will they be the Cumberland Braves, Cobb County Braves, Georgia Braves or stick with Atlanta?

This news exposed that a lot of people did not know the Big Boss Man passed away.

Is this the record for shortest tenure in a newly-built ballpark for an MLB team?

Is this the record for shortest tenure in a newly-built ballpark for an MLB team? The Marlins were in their ballpark shorter I believe.

I've only been to Turner Field 2 times (none since 2006) Is it really that bad? They've only played there 4 years longer than the Pirates have played in PNC Park. It's kind of ridiculous they can easily move to a different area and build a new stadium, while the Oakland A's are stuck in O.Co Coliseum.

I'd heard a lot from other Braves fans how inconvenient the stadium location was, but still surprised they pulled the trigger on this move now.
Turner Field was never really ideal, it was just too convenient to move into after the '96 Olympic games.
I think if they could've built it themselves, for one thing, there wouldn't 50,000+ seats. Which was just too hard to fill with a local fan-base that isn't so die-hard. You see the newer ballparks with 40,000-43,000 capacity, that seems like a sweet spot.
And generally it's just kinda dull compared to the stadiums that were built around the same time and since. They all have some kind of unique character about them, which the Ted seems to lack.
I'm not sure I buy the reasoning they gave about all the renovation needed at the Ted, but I definitely see how this makes sense for them.

A good portion of the fan base, however, lives in the Northern suburbs. Having to drive all the way through town sucks. To use a Pittsburgh analogy that only three or four of you will understand, this is like if the Pirates moved from the West End to Robinson Township or Monroeville.

Didn't realize it was such a hassle for fans to get to Turner Field. Usually downtown stadiums are the most convenient locations. I know Atlanta's Public transportation is relatively suspect, but is Cobb County any better?

Atlanta is infamous for its awful traffic, so a move to somewhere outside the city limits makes sense.

True, but that stadium was also used by the Dolphins during that time. If we're going by that, the shortest might be the Rockies, who used Mile High Stadium in their first two years of existence before moving to Coors Field. If we're talking primarily a baseball field, I can't think of a team that's been in a ballpark for a shorter amount of time.

But Mile High was meant as a temporary ballpark. I'm talking about NEWLY-BUILT ballparks, so Joe Robbie doesn't count.

I guess you could count the Braves back at County Stadium in Milwaukee. Stadium was built for them, they played there for only 12 years and then moved to Atlanta.

I'm still surprised they're moving so seemingly soon too; the Ted is still a "new" ballpark in my head, but I've apparently been spoiled with the Jake in terms of representing that generation of ballparks, so I don't know how good, bad, or ugly Turner Field is in practice. Does seem like the motivations are predominantly traffic and location-wise though.
Wonder if Turner's going to try to keep the naming rights.

I know Atlanta's Public transportation is relatively suspect, but is Cobb County any better? Marta, especially in the area around Turner Field, isn't great. CCT (Cobb Community Transit) is borderline nonexistent. While Atlanta isn't a "get on the subway" city like New York is, the lack of a stable system is a major issue. Cobb County could conceivably join the Marta system, but the 1% county-wide sales tax is a deal that would fund their inclusion is a deal breaker for many.

Oh man, how pissed is Brian McCann that he's hitting free agency just as the Braves prepare to move to Cobb County? He is baseball's Big Boss Man.
I mean, that has to be VERBATIM what he said to Carlos Gomez.

Well, Turner Field was originally the Olympic Stadium when Atlanta hosted the 1996 Summer games. I'm not sure if it was specifically built to be a baseball stadium so much as converted to one after the Olympics were done with.
