I get what Meltzer is saying about the belts being props, which in a sense they are, but mocking someone for being a lifelong fan that documented one of her life's acheivements? Das not cool.

I'm with AJ on this one. It was a milestone in her life that show's off the sacrifices she's made to her body and personal life. The belt isn't what the date means to her, it's the date that shows that she did something she set out to do.

I think they're just being jaded assholes, like almost every other wrestling writer. Also, titles in a fake sport are only as important as the people holding them act like they are. It's not AJ's fault that the Women's equivalent of the WWE Championship gets treated like shit.

Meltzer comes across in this article like drunk Roddy Piper. It's like he wants to bitch about AJ except he doesn't, and then rather than continuing to bitch, starts talking about Jerry Lawler for some reason.
Discussions on AJ are just a dank pit of crap. Now, not all people do this, but one side is like "BLARGH SHE SUCKS I DON'T LIKE HER THEREFORE SHE SUCKS!" and the other says "HOW DARE YOU, SHE IS THE AHURA MAZDA OF WRESTLING!"
No and no. She's a human being. And one who is not above criticism, but also someone who shouldn't just be insulted randomly. If people have something to say, at least let it be some kind of intelligent issue to raise.

Dave Meltzer remarks that AJ Lee's tattoo was marky.

Dave Meltzer disappears amidst a sea of neckbeards and ROH shirts.
Seriously though I don't think she's marky, but I do think the tattoo is the dumbest tooliest thing I've seen in a long time.

To me its no different than an actor getting excited and happy about getting a major storyline in a TV show or film and being proud of that fact.
This derison about belt marks would to me feel more on point if this were say an indy company or to a lesser degree TNA, where the promoter's intent regarding things like money paid to talent could be seen compared the value of the belt and make a fairly cynical interpretation.
However, WWE has largely become the go to brand for wrestling in the English speaking world, and I think it could be argued that being the most prominent female competitor both in on air time and in kayfabe so to speak in a multi-billion entertainment entity is of some personal accomplishment and not so ill-fitting for a tattoo.
Certainly in this day and age people have gotten ink for far more petty and meaningless lessons.

There's a million worse tattoos in wrestling. And it's small and hidden behind her hair, not like it's in huge font on her side. Like some other people named AJ I know. ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

I kind if agree with Meltzer. Good for AJ for achieving her goal and what not but its true the belt doesn't really mean anything. Like imagine how mocked Ryder would be if he got a similar tat for the US title. And yes I realize the divas title is the pinnacle for the divas, but that doesn't automatically make it super valued and respected It is to her. That's all that matters.

For a diva it is as high as it gets, but it is really stupid to commemorate with a tatoo.
She just gives off that crazy sex vibe, and i like her only for that. Everything else is just average.

![](http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2013/05/15/sports/WRESTLING1/WRESTLING1-articleLarge.jpg) Bunch of lucha masks, Ali poster, collection of Japanese magazines (that he can't read, btw). I like the guy but he collects stuff too. At least AJ took bumps to get her belt.

"belt mark"
This is one of those things that makes really appreciate wrestling.
Y'know - its like - only in wrestling.
No one would ever say this about something like the Academy Awards or what have you.

What hypocrite. I have it on good authority, that Dave has the date of the first time he gave a match five stars, on his ass.

I'm with Meltzer here. The tattoo is silly, but whatever. If it feels right, do it. But the wrestling business, like the showbiz industry is built on seniority and getting things done with the most effort possible, spending the least amount possible, in as little time as possible. Wrestling is about performing to the highest level. It's those men's professions, through and through. If they underperform or act out, most performers are seen as expendable. There may not be as many wrestlers as there are actors out there, but it's safe to say that there's enough talent in the industry to confirm that if a Kofi Kingston or an A.J. acted out or wasn't in line of what is expected of them to do, they can be fired today and easily replaced 20 minutes later.
Obviously star power helps with that. *coughORTONcough*
Compare wrestling with other jobs. I work in the title industry of real estate. There's a spot I want to achieve sometime in the near future. If I were to get it, I wouldn't tattoo my new name tag or the name of my job title on my body. I might save the first paycheck or a letter from my boss telling me I was accepted for the promotion. I imagine a lot of people (about 100%) are in it for the money. It is their professional occupation. So outside of HHH, I can't imagine a whole lot of them currently stressing over their position on the card.
That excludes situations where money is involved. Then, by all means, workers care about where they place on cards. But if John Cena isn't champ, but still sells the merch and the PPVs despite being midcard, I doubt he'd fuss.
How this pertains to A.J., I'm sure even to the most die-hard WWE fans and the people who actually work backstage, the Divas title is one of the least sought after or cared about positions in the company. It's largely a piss-break for audiences and in old days the belt was put on bikini models who knew a flashy move or two. Candice Michelle. Debra. Sable. Melina. Kelly Kelly. That kind of lineage speaks volumes of the care that the WWE women's division has had. So while it might be insane to see it this way, the belt might just be considered unimportant in the actual circles of the business they work in. It's largely inconsequential and not many people really care either way about who holds it. Hell, there's a television show consisting of the purely bikini model Divas on television, while the actual workers of the division continue to languish in 2 minute televised matches each week. And even those are botchtastic. I don't think she has heat, but I wouldn't be shocked to find that the reaction to her tat was "umm..... that's nice A.J."
If that was her goal, then she accomplished it. But in the scheme of the business, it's not important towards making her company more money, which is what a business always sets out to do.

I get what he's saying about how a company could take advantage of a person loving the business so much. But honestly that's just a sad state of affairs in the corporate world we live. It's horrible really that people can be taken advantage of because they love what they do. I wish we had more like AJ who had been fans for life and it's all they ever wanted to do because those people usually try harder.
So yeah I understand Meltzer's point but just because WWE and TNA take such a bullshit exploitative view doesn't mean he has to mock her too. That just makes him a dick.

That kind of lineage speaks volumes of the care that the WWE women's division has had. Yeah, it's not like Melina was a wrestler who spent years on the indies before going to developmental, spending years there and then being one of the anchors in a wrestling-oriented division. Come on, you're seriously lumping her with Debra, Sable and Kelly? Were you even watching in 07, 08 or 09? Honestly I don't even think Candice deserves that dubious honor. At least she gave a damn, unlike those three.
