What I mean is, I get the mantra and the desire by many to let a story play out; but has there ever been a case where that old chestnut has been trotted out where things ended up better?
Is there even one example of a story appearing to go off the rails that turned out awesome?

Someone made a graphic about that earlier in the year. It needs to be updated, I believe.

Quite a few times actually though admittedly they are exceptions and not the rule. I could list at least 5 examples right now. I could.

It's a possibility that it has. However, I don't EVER recall 'wait and see' actually working out. I can't imagine how someone could use 'wait and see' with a WWE angle and keep a straight face.

Whether or not "Wait and See" works depends on whether or not you like where the angle ends up, so it's strictly a matter of opinion on whether or not it works at all.

If you want to go way back, maybe the JBL push? A lot of people were crapping on it and saying it was going to be unsuccessful but people were patient and decided to wait to pass judgment and the push worked out pretty well.

The only real recent one I can think of is when people were screaming that Punk was going nowhere after WM 27, he was more or less in filler matches had NUCLEAR HEAT, he was being wasted ... and within like 3 months he ended up starting "the longest reigning champion of the modern era" run.

JBL's push is a good example. People crapped all over it hard, at first.
John Cena's super push. There was a time when people really believed that he was no-talented and undeserving of his push. He had no respect amongst certain segments of the fans. Those same fans still hate him, but they respect him and it's almost a loving kind of hate.
HHH's initial run a WWF champion was not very positively received, but improved by the time he was feuding with Foley.
It seemed like Edge was only going to be a jobber to the stars until he finally got a victory over Cena using his Money in the Bank. Even then, people were saying that he was buried for good when Cena won it right back. He wasn't.
Most things involving Kane. He can turn crap into gold.

The easiest way for me to do this is to take WWE out of it. Considering the "creative team" is a bunch of former Hollywood writers, let's go with a movie plot instead of wrestling.
The story begins with our hero who seemingly has everything. He's just achieved a major goal or milestone in his life. Almost immediately, tragedy strikes, and that which he has worked for is taken from him.
So far so good, it's the plot to most action movies.
So the villain rises up, a consortium of baddies each with unique personalities. They begin to throw whatever they can at our hero to keep from him what he has earned, all the while justifying their actions through their own twisted worldview.
Again, works just fine.
We've just seen the hero get screwed over several times in the first act, while we also see a secondary good guy, a former henchman of the baddies by force, finally grow a pair and stand up.
This is great, now you've got a hero and a former villain who is seeking some combination of redemption and validation. Problem is, this is where WWE goes off the rails, and where "wait and see" goes to die.
The former henchman becomes the focus, or one of the "main villains" suddenly decides that he is the hero. The original wronged hero from act one? He's still there, sort of, only now he's embroiled in a battle with some other evil group who have no real connection to the people who did him wrong.
That or he was defeated by the villain and simply decided to move on to something else (summer of Punk condlusion).
No one would pay for this movie, it would be laughed at by critics, and fans would demand refunds.

Mankind? He just looked like another freak to feed to the Undertaker, then in his first match against taker, he actually beats Taker (and i dont believe taker got a televised win against him until survivor series 96 to be honest), and from there, became one of the top stars of the company, even getting a title match, and we all know where he eventually wound up.

Mankind always looked like a serious threat to the Undertaker. Right from the start he had the vibe of someone who was saying "OK Undertaker, now you've got a real arch-enemy for the first time in your career"

I wouldn't watch wrestling or anything else if I didn't want to see want to see what was going to happen next. That's kind of point. It's shocking to me how many people not only have abandoned that general premise of entertainment consumption when it comes to wrestling, but still watch it, and also actively mock others who look forward to seeing what will happen next.
In other words, I find "wait and see" to be one of the more annoyingly over-cynical shticks this board has come up with.
I do though, kind of wonder what the majority here actually wanted out of these storylines. Like the nexus. I thought it was a fine angle with a limited shelf life. But what was everyone else clamoring for? WWE champion Wade Barrett and years of nexus run-ins?
