For a long time during the brand split it was pushed on equal footing with the WWE title. However, at some point it lost that status and dropped to the point where its ranked a little above how the IC title used to be seen. What title reign was the catalyst for that drop?

I started getting an odd feeling about it when they had Khali win it. I understand the reasoning behind putting on a monster heel, but for whatever reason he struck me as the first WHC that I just couldn't see them putting them every putting the WWE belt, and the value of it lowered, at least in my eyes.

I'd say back in 2009 when it became exclusive to Smackdown.

Rey Mysterio would probably be a good choice just based on the way they booked him but I would probably point to CM Punk's first win as the point when it stopped being considered equal.

I know Swagger will be scapegoated, but to me the clear and obvious answer is when the RAW SuperShow started and the World Heavyweight Champion became just a part of the RAW midcard and not the guy anymore.

Honestly, an argument could be made that the World Heavyweight title was seen as more important than the WWE title when Triple H held it during his reign of terror |

Swagger, and his treatment after losing it. Then, having it open 'Mania the following year did kind of drop it down in estimations.

Well, I think the last time it truly main-evented a PPV, was when Kane fought Undertaker at HitC. It was either then or the next PPV. That was back in 2010. That was also the year Jack Swagger won it.
I'd say 2009, when it became a SD exclusive, though. I remember Jericho/Cena and Jericho/HBK feeling like real major title programs back in 2008, so it still had that upper-tier feeling to it despite Punk winning it and mid-carding with it. By 2009, I was pleasantly shocked that Punk and Jeff Hardy closed SummerSlam despite it being a major title in a TLC match. If it wasn't clear before, it was clear now that the main belt was on Raw. After 2009, the WHC became sort of an experimental title to give younger guys who needed establishment and a 'thank you' title for guys like Kane, Mark Henry and Big Show. Oh yeah, and it gave Del Rio something to do.

I haven't been following very consistently following for the last few years, but have always been taking note of who is champion. Based on that, I always saw it as at least almost equal to the WWE Title.
Since I've last started following again (early last year), only this year did I start to see it gradually decline. The defining moment for me was this year's MITB PPV. Looking at both MITB match competitors, it was obvious one was the showpiece event and the other was just a warmup.

Honestly, an argument could be made that the World Heavyweight title was seen as more important than the WWE title when Triple H held it during his reign of terror Absolutely. Certainly Smackdown was a much better program as a whole, but no one could tell me that the WHC wasn't THE title during that time since it literally did feel like Trips would kill his mother for that thing. But it diminished some when Batista went to Smackdown. Rey not winning it in the main event, despite winning the Rumble didn't help. Neither did his shitty reign. Khali winning it was an embarassment. I stopped watching during this time. But Swagger takes the f***in' cake. For all the hard work that Undertaker, Edge and Jericho had put into the title in the last couple years...Swagger just blew them away with how uninteresting he was. |
