Sinatra... if we're looking for female representation, Patsy Cline gets my vote.

Clapton maybe? I mean, the guy's in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of Cream, the Yardbirds and as a solo act.

Jay-Z. And that's based more on his artistry than his commercial clout.

Yeah, if this were music's Mt Rushmore, I'd maybe include 1 of those guys. Western Pop music's Mt. Rushmore would include them, and for the 4th I'd probably Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, or Madonna.
That's not including hip hop in this either, because if we did, I think you could make a huge argument for a lot of other people.

So do we all at least agree Elvis, MJ and the Beatles get the first three spots?

In a "western music" mt. Rushmore my picks would be Chuck Berry, Robert Johnson, Bob Dylan, and James Brown.

So do we all at least agree Elvis, MJ and the Beatles get the first three spots? MJ is just a bubblegum copy of James Brown and even then people forget most of his material was crap after his first 2 albums. Elvis is great but I tend to think the people who influenced him were just as good. I would go Beatles,Prince,Jay Z,Sonic Youth

The problem with The Beatles is that including them messes up the visual of 'Mt. Rushmore' unless you just use McCartney or just use Lennon. If you did use only one member of The Beatles, I'd depict him with his young 'moptop' look just to futher distinguish him as a member of The Beatles rather than as a solo artist.

I don't think Elvis belongs on there. Yes, the guy was talented and had charisma, but he's overrated as a musician. Many of his songs were written by other people, yet he gets credit for them because he was the face and voice behind them. Elvis became insanely popular because young American WASPs were eager to embrace rock-&-roll, but the prejudice of Jim Crow radio and television broadcasters discouraged them from getting behind the black artists who pioneered the sound that Elvis appropriated. If Elvis had been black like the artists that influenced him, he probably wouldn't have eclipsed Chuck Berry or Little Richard in terms of popularity and longevity.
Even though Chuck Berry praised Elvis as 'the greatest,' he still pointed out that "Blacks didn't have the air-waves Elvis had."
Once again, I do not mean to suggest that Elvis was a bad performer or artist, just that he probably wouldn't have gotten as big as he did if aforementioned circumstances weren't in his favour. Whereas Elvis had a tremendous societal advantage over other artists, Michael Jackson earned his popularity in spite of the fact that MTV was reluctant to air his videos because the channel's executives were convinced that audiences would not appreciate seeing music videos by a black artist.
