This is something I've always wondered. The first three spots should go to Elvis, Michael Jackson and the Beatles (collectively). But who gets the fourth spot? Madonna? Kurt Cobain? Marvin Gaye? Hendrix? Bieber?  |

I would have a hard time giving that spot to Madonna; there are a million other women who deserve that spot before her, but perhaps I'm biased because I've never seen the appeal in Madonna.
I'd second Chuck Berry or Buddy Holly; without those building blocks of rock and roll, who's to say we'd ever have an Elvis, MJ or Beatles?

Trying to carry over the Mount Rushmore concept to other categories or genres is tricky. When Mount Rushmore was first being conceived, there had only been 29 U.S. Presidents (actually 28, since Cleveland was the 22 and 24th). So you were only trying to pick four out of a possible 28.
Trying to pick only four people for other genres is much more difficult as you have hundreds or thousands of possible choices.
Also, I think you could even narrow your definition of music to "Popular Music from the second half of the 20th Century to Today" because your earliest artists are Elvis and The Beatles. What about popular music of the 1920s? 1930s? 1940s? 1840s? See what I mean?

Other potential options... Louis Armstrong, BB King, Mozart, Beethoven, Springsteen, Dylan, Ella Fitzgerald, Temptations... still too many to list. It's a fun exercise but you'll never get agreement, ever.
