Meh it was good in parts, like Bones' disco jumpsuit. And I'm in a minority of people I know in person that thinks Persis Khambata looked better bald than with hair.

I never understood her character. Based on what I could tell, she was so good at having sex, to do so would have killed the crew, so she remained celibate. I don't get it.

Star Trek tends to do intrigue very well (VI is still my favorite of the films) which makes me wonder why it hasn't really been attempted at all since DS9. The trailer left me more confused than anything. Although I'm willing to bet it's a fakeout, destroying the Enterprise is a little too Star Trek III and I really, really wish they'd DQ Something Different rather than trying to keep attempting the movie version of cheap nostalgia pops. I'm sure you could make a gripping, cerebral Star Trek movie that gets great critical acclaim. I'm not so certain that it would capture the kind of audience required to make it as successful as the reboot films have been thus far. While I would certainly go and watch a film like that, I'd much rather it be made into a miniseries or even a full series. I think the destruction of the Enterprise could be a fakeout as well. It seems reminiscent of the novel Chain of Attack, where the major part of the plot is the entire crew of the Enterprise find themselves beamed off the ship and held captive on an alien planet while stranded in another galaxy. While infinitely more actionised, this seems to follow the same basic premise - exploring an unknown part of deep space, all the crew separated from Enterprise, and dealing with warring alien factions. I never understood her character. Based on what I could tell, she was so good at having sex, to do so would have killed the crew, so she remained celibate. I don't get it. Probably stuff that was for Star Trek: Phase II The canon explanation was that Deltans were a sex-orientated species and that they considered humans too emotionally immature, which would lead to a Queen Bee situation where the crew would put the needs of the Deltan crew above their duties. Some have theorised that it was Roddenbury's hamfisted commentary on the Free Love movement. Roddenbury reused the Decker/Ilia relationship almost verbatim for Riker/Troi in the first season of TNG almost a decade later, so he obviously really wanted to explore that idea.

Looks entertaining, but then I've liked their take generally.
That said, wow, it almost looks like they went: "If you've hated this version so far, you're gonna LOATHE this one."

Yeah, but there's 7 months between now and the opening, a ...lot...could ... Ya know, happen to ...make the...movie ...good? You know what, screw it! I defended Into Darkness more than I should have. This one is on it's own dammit.

Eh, I'm going to see Episode 7 so I'll see the trailer then, but personally, I don't even know if I'll see Beyond. Might be worth a look, but personally, while I thought Into Darkness was alright in the theater, I thought it was a lot worse rewatching it on DVD.

I haven't watched this new trailer but if they bring Ilia into these bullshit new Star Trek movies, I'll be over here with my laserdisc. "Persis Khambatta is... Lieutenant Ilia!"

Some spoilers from footage shown at the fan event {Spoiler}-A bored Kirk makes a reference to his five year mission feeling more and more like a string of "episodes"
-He and McCoy talk a bit about ageing, now that it's Kirk's birthday he's depressed that he's now older than his father was
-During the attack on the Enterprise, the Turbo life is ejected into space with Sulu still inside of it
-Kirk makes a defiant last stand within the ship like his father did in the 2009 movie

Is it just me or does that look like a NX class star ship at the end of the trailer.

New trailer is... Alright? I dunno, it looks more calm and character focused than the other two and like it's at least trying to be its own thing instead of shamelessly aping a better movie like Into Darkness did, but seems oddly mopey for a Star Trek movie, I find it hard to care much about Kirk as a character given how both of the last two movies have mostly been about what an immature asshole he is, and the villain looks really generic and dull based on what's shown of him and what's been said about him.

Personally I don't see the point. A gay character in Trek is best explored on a TV series where a relationship can be fleshed out. Sulu is already pretty much a background character, so short of him kissing his partner goodbye before heading off on an away mission, there's not really much they can do with it other than tokenism and saying "see, Sulu is gay, isn't that great? Now look at these explosions and motorcycle jumps....oh and Carol Marcus is wearing her panties again, cool!"
