To steer the subject away from the Takei thing a bit... Honestly really dunno what to expect with this movie. Doesn't look or sound bad necessarily, but what information is out about it sounds pretty lifeless and flat. Just looks really bland all around. Though early word of mouth on it's pretty good. Pegg is a good writer, with his worst film (Paul) still being well-received critically, and Justin Lin has a strong record of making exciting movies with ensemble casts so I'm not surprised that the early word of mouth is positive. I will most likely be seeing it first weekend of release over here, since I have enjoyed the reboot series thus far, though like you I'm really not sure what to expect.

I'm not as excited as I have been for the other two, but I'll probably check it out on a matinee that Sunday or something.

A little late to the Sulu debate, but I definitely remember Takei saying for years that he always considered Sulu the character to be straight, so not too surprised that he's unhappy with that decision.

Why the hell is the movie's official Twitter account retweeting reviews like this?

Why the hell is the movie's official Twitter account retweeting reviews like this? Well, they've been quite blatant that they don't actually want to be Star Trek from the start of the reboot.

Didn't expect it to be as terrible as the first trailer made it look, but didn't expect quite such a positive early response.

IGN says it does a way better job of getting the feel of classic Trek then the last two did. Must be a lot different then the trailers made it seem

Say what you will about the JJverse not being Trek, the formula is working Everywhere I've read points to Beyond's deviating from the established JJ Abrams formula, and moving towards a more traditional Trek feel.

It is a good movie, and is very un-Abrams like except for maybe the first five minutes.

Watched it this morning. It was okay. I enjoyed it. There were some moments of jarringly-bad CGI (it seems like a lot of movies have this now, I have to assume it's supposed to be seen in 3D or something) and some things that didn't make sense to me, but overall I enjoyed it.

Was not going to see this after lackluster Into Darkness and lackluster trailer. Was happy my date want to go see it though. Love it from top to bottom. Never thought it dragged on and while the motivations from the villain were difficult to grasp I was still overall happy about the product. The climax was definitely different but in a good way.

I saw it today and I thought it was entertaining but a bit bland.
The weakest of the JJ verse.

I haven't seen any of the trailers, but I see how it was slightly more high-minded (not really the right word, just not able to think of a better one) than the previous Abrams Trek movies.
Hate the action cinematography, but that goes with any "up close and shaky-cam" movie. The plot is pretty good and I like how the villain was portayed, though it didn't quite do enough technobabbly explaining to make it truly trekky.

Just got back from seeing it. Overall I enjoyed it.
What I liked: - Development of the Spock/McCoy relationship. - McCoy getting all the best lines. - The nods to Enterprise (the NX-class ship, Edison being a MACO and fighting the Xindi). - More screen time for Scotty.
What I didn't like: - The Yorktown. It's just the Citadel from Mass Effect. - The antagonist. "We have a fantastic actor in Idris Elba, let's make him unrecognisable under layers of prosthetics and make him talk like he has a mouth full of marbles!" - The finale was very anti-climatic.

I liked Yorktown. For Star Trek it's unique.
Also, Poor Ensign Syl (even if she was a lot different than we're used to for a Starfleet character)
