I'm not sure how things are in the UK, but in the US, I don't think Oasis gets anywhere near as much love as they should. They totally broke the mold from grunge while still making great rock, alternative sounding music.
Another band I think is much better than I ever gave them credit for is Fallout Boy. Whether or not the whole emo thing was good (and most of it wasn't) they were really pioneers of making that sound. A million times better than anything whiney simple plan or good Charlotte made.

agreed on Oasis, yeah Noel Gallagher isnt gonna be a flashy guitarist playing a billion notes per second, but dammit he is one hell of a great guitarist who can show off when he wants to...just watch any live performance of Champagne Supernova or Gas Panic and tell me Noel Gallagher isnt a great guitar player!
also have to say it about Blur too...Graham is one of the best guitarists of the 90's mix that with the great bass and drums they had and Damon's great piano playing on some of the song and they were an outstanding musical band!
also have to go with the 2001 - 2002 guns n roses lineup, Buckethead, Robin Finck, and Brain as your core people topped with Tommy Stinson from the replacements on bass you have one hell of a great band musically. people always give them crap because they all want Slash back which i get that, but i was excited about what they would write with Axl and i wasnt let down, chinese democracy was a damn fine album, i just hope to hear the other songs from those sessions someday.

Fantastic Planet is a god damn amazing album. As far as this sound goes, I'd also have to mention Hum.

I'll second Fall Out Boy, but I liked a good chunk of the emo wave anyway. Also Scissor Sisters, at least in America.

It shouldn't need to be said, but Dusty Springfield. One of the most versatile women of all time, and certainly the most soulful. Yet only known for 3-4 songs here, and unfortunately becoming known generally for sordid sex-and-drugs stories that so-called friends wanted to write smearing biographies about.
You should also look up a New York area cabaret singer named Baby Jane Dexter, she is something else!

King's X....phenomenal musicians and Doug has a great voice, and had the tools to be a BIG deal, but they always seem to fall under the radar for a majority of the mass music media.
You can also add Enuff Z'Nuff to the list as well....great power pop band who were unfortunately lumped into the hair bands from the era in which they started.

Absolutely has to be James, one of the most criminally overlooked bands of the 90s alternative scene.

A 30 year career where they're still at the top of their game, their last album was in a lot of critics best of lists in 2013, they do amazing shows for their tours and have been an influence on bands from Suede kickstarting Britpop to the Killers and Lady Gaga.

In the UK I would say Oasis were incredibly overrated. They were a great band, but were often treated as bigger deals than they actually were.

Gwar. Especially Dave Brockie. He had a very versatile vocal range. That dude was mega-talented. Him and the rest of the band will never get the respect they deserve simply because they wear costumes.

Almost every ska band I listen to. So many great musicians, but the style as a whole has this weird reputation with a lot of non fans. But with bands like Bombskare, St. Petersburg Ska/Jazz review and such, the talent is overwhelming.

In the UK I would say Oasis were incredibly overrated. They were a great band, but were often treated as bigger deals than they actually were. I'd argue Oasis have gone full circle, they started off beloved but around 2005 with the rise of the likes of garage rock orientated bands such as the Arctic Monkeys a negative backlash resulted, however now that perception of Oasis is so commonplace that I would suggest they have become underrated again. my opinion: They never reinvented the wheel by any means, but for anthemic, people pleasing indie rock it is hard to beat them.

Act 2 of Phantom of the Opera. Sure, the big tunes everyone remembers are in act 1, but act 2 holds all the emotion and drama. Truly underrated.

I've bee listening to Anathema a LOT lately, and I think they've cracked the upper tier of my favorite bands. I don't understand how people don't know this band at all. At least in the States.

So often, 90s Britpop is boiled down to Oasis VS Blur, ignoring Pulp, who for my money were the best of the three by far.
