Well this has tipped me into watching the Grand Budapest Hotel DVD I bought from Family Video a few months ago, and it's about as pleasant as gargling battery acid so far (greatly enjoyed his first 4, skipped the next 2, despised Moonrise Kingdom).
I feel obligated to see Boyhood (hate Linklater after enduring Slacker and the first eight minutes of Waking Life, the idea of watching this brings to mind the thought of having a railroad spike hammered into my skull) and Whiplash (sure to recall miserable memories of high school band) as well.
Frustratingly few of these ostensibly 'good' movies make it down to the second run theaters I've been using as a means of trying to see each and every movie these days.
Including The Pyramid.

Just use Redbox Well yeah, or VOD. I would prefer to see them at the theater. Of course I guess I'd prefer more variety period at my favorite second run theater (with 14 screens of 35mm). It's January and they're still running Maleficent/HTTYD2/22 Jump Street/Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. I guess most of these movies had no 35mm prints to begin with, of course, 35mm becoming rather scarce in general. FWIW, I actually ended up enjoying GBH past the first 15-20 minutes when it seemed to slow down on the wanking and sort of told a story.

I haven't seen a single one of the best picture nominees this year, despite wanting to. I just never had time. Seems like a perfect year to do the Oscar marathon at AMC, assuming they don't put it on a goddamn work day like the usually do their special events. I haven't seen either Song of the Sea or The Tale of Princess Kaguya, and I can't honestly say I would have put The Lego Movie over How to Train Your Dragon 2 or Big Hero 6. Probably would have dropped Box Trolls for Lego. Box Trolls was like the only sure fire lock due to it being stop motion. The Academy LOVES them some stop motion animated films. And yet one hasn't won except 2005's Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit Coraline Corpse Bride Fantastic Mr. Fox Frankenweenie ParaNorman The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists! All nominated, all lost.

Okay fine, I'll agree with the people that bashed Foxcatcher. That was not very good...dammit. Ruffalo was great and Tatum was solid, though.

What I've never understood is how a film can get nominated for best picture and yet none of the actors, directors, etc. are nominated for their respective catagories.
So what makes it a "Best picture" then? It has to be either the acting, the directing, or the producing. And yet, no one is nominated in those categories from Selma, but it's still nominated for Best Picture.
What the f***? If the acting, directing, and the things that go into the movie are not Oscar-worthy, how can the movie itself be Oscar-worthy?
I truly believe they had no desire to nominate this movie yet they were scared of the massive backlash they'd get if the movie received no nominations and they are so tone-deaf, they thought that only giving it a pity nomination would reduce the amount of outrage.

Also to appease Oprah in which this is the fourth time she's trying to buy herself a Oscar.

As far as acting goes, sometimes the sum is greater than it's parts. There might not be a single role that stands out in an ensemble movie, but the movie itself is fantastic. Where as there might be a single fantastic performance in a movie that may not be good enough to get a Best Picture nomination. I do think it's weird for directing, but I think that's largely a result of there being different voters for that one, and that there've been more Best Picture nominees than best director nominees. Anyways, I've been wanting to see Birdman. I did see Grand Budapest Hotel, and it was better than Moonrise Kingdom, but still pales in comparison to some of his other movies. I think he's sort of the Dreamworks of the Oscars, his stuff will get nominated because of who he is, but he's not really likely to win

I don't get to go to the movies very often so when the Best Picture nominees are announced i go hunt them down at Redbox and judge for myself. (Nebraska was my favorite last year) But this year it's seeming to be more dificult. The only films out on home media are Boyhood and Grand Budapest Hotel and Redbox doesn't carry Grand Budapest Hotel.

What I've never understood is how a film can get nominated for best picture and yet none of the actors, directors, etc. are nominated for their respective catagories.. The White Ribbon earned a Best Picture nomination nod from me a few years back (2009-2010), yet pulled a Selma in terms of no other major award nominations. Cinematography I nominated, but none of the acting or directing categories. In that case, has to do with fluidity and the whole being much greater than the sum of its parts, as has already been stated, I believe. In terms of doing that without getting Director nod, sometimes that's because there are five other directors whose vision or rubber stamp is more clearly defined and influential on a work and--in the case of The White Ribbon--director Michael Haneke was just behind five others. I can get a director many times when a few other aspects may not meet that bar. All that said, I get your point. Especially about Selma. But I was just trying to help and explain from a rare example that I thought up. For what it's worth, I tend to agree with you to an extent. But I wouldn't argue that a Best Picture nominee needs Best Acting nominees. Not at all actually. Actors get in the way of a lot of good movies that could've been brilliant.

Is this the third straight year that Bradley Cooper has been nominated for an acting award?

So is Patricia Arquette the first sibling to a wrestling heavyweight champion to be nominated?

So is Patricia Arquette the first sibling to a wrestling heavyweight champion to be nominated? Just give it time, Hogan will say Meryl Streep is his long lost sister

So is Patricia Arquette the first sibling to a wrestling heavyweight champion to be nominated? Probably. Garrett Dylan could potentially be another (very doubtful since he was released), though it would be a father-son thing rather than siblings.

The fact that Selma did not get more nominations upsets me.
