Well that's what happens when you make yourself apart of the game when you put your ass up there.

Well that's what happens when you make yourself apart of the game when you put your ass up there. I loved Sid's logic about attacking Jose. You don't need half a brain to recognize the genius of that.

This was one of many missteps they took when they pushed Shawn as a top face.
I mean, I always felt the feuds and the matches were actually booked pretty good, but the cosmetic changes that Shawn made or didn't make really hurt him as a top guy.
First off, they had him come out with Lothario, when he clearly didn't need him.
Secondly, while "Sexy Boy" is iconic now, not many people in the 90's are going to want to cheer a guy who talks about how awesome he is and how many women he gets. He should have gotten some edgier music to fit the dynamic of him in the ring.
Third, the stripping...the goddamn stripping. At least he was getting away from the Blue Oyster Club look.
Fourth, given his ability in the ring, they could have made him less white meat. I mean, even Bret had his moments where he broke the rules.

This is interesting, I don't recall it either. Shawn was attacked by the Corporation at the start of 1999. He did give an interview afterwards but it must have been on Heat as I don't remember it and we didn't get Heat back then. Perhaps Jose was with him then. OR the year in that quote is a typo and it's actually referring to Jose returning in January 1997 to build towards the Rumble rematch in San Antonio.

this is a bit I found about his 1999 appearence on History Of WWE
WWF @ San Antonio, TX - Freeman Coliseum - January 10, 1999 (8,303; sell out) Rod Begnaud defeated Khris Germany Sunday Night Heat - 1/10/99 - shown live - featured Kevin Kelly & Shane McMahon on commentary; included an opening in-ring segment with Vine & Shane McMahon, Pat Patterson, & Gerald Brisco, with Vince stating he would deal with WWF World Champion Mankind on Raw, then addressing the severe injuries sustained by Shawn Michaels on the previous week's Raw and noting that he warned Michaels not to show up that night; moments later, the McMahons noticed Jose Lothario in the crowd and invited him into the ring, with Lothario refusing to apologize on Shawn's behalf and then being attacked by Vince's entourage

Jose was WWF's attempt to try to humanize HBK to the masses. The problems were that HBK hated the dude and Jose had the on screen presence of a 2 week old bologna sandwich. He took away the arrogant prick charm that Michaels had and made him more hated to fans. I heard, to this day, if you rub Shawn on the shoulders he will lose his shit and start cussing at you in Spanish.

There was a report in the Observer that they used him to try to get Shawn over with Hispanics.

So the fans weren't taken with Vince's chosen one so they trot out a veteran to make him look better.
Sounds familiar…

It always looked hilarious to see HBK followed around by this ancient old man wearing ugly sweaters.

I had no idea who he was, but I could tell that he was no legend. And, they could have done a better job of making Shawn a likeable face than putting him together with his trainer that he apparently didn't like.

My God! The look on Shawn's face. Just utter disdain for that man. I don't think you find a picture where Shawn looks legit happy with him.
