It's because they had to pay Brock Lesnar like $4 million, Taker/Hunner/Stinger a million each, and didn't have that many more Network subscribers as they had full PPV purchases in the past.

The Terminator entrance probably ate up a good chunk of money.

Don't forget Rock (who was probably around Lesnar's pay grade) and Ronda Rousey as well. Actually, come to think of it, didn't the last west coast Mania (also headlined by Lesnar funny enough) bomb as well? Obviously not lose money if this was the first but just do horrible?

Not a complete surprise. There's the Network factor, obviously. But the production costs for this year were unique too; payday for virtually the whole roster, as well as for the NWO and DX, hiring a small army of extras for the special entrances, holding it in an outdoor arena that probably brought all kinds of technical challenges of its own-the let goes on. Yeah, it seemed like the entire roster had their own special entrance this year, didn't it? The Andre the Giant battle royal puts retry much the entire roster on the show. More $$$ to pay out.

Hopefully next year they can maybe cut some of the more extraneous costs like completely unwanted concert segments featuring musicians that cost significant amounts of money to play for a crowd who absolute could not care less.

Good call, I just looked at the card and forgot that Rock was even there. Mania 19 in Seattle did do relatively poorly, I think under 700,000 buys. Attendance seemed good for both shows though, so I'm not sure what the west coast aspect would have to do with it.

How was WrestleMania 31 a financial failure but WrestleMania XXX a success? Location. Remember everything costs double in California

By comparison 17 did over a million, 18 did almost 900,000, and 20 did right around a million. Also, Mania 30 made money where 31 didn't probably because the Network was less successful at the time; Mania 30 had way, way more PPV buys than 31 did.

Nothing to do with build and moreso to do with lack of pay-per-view buys because of the Network. What I want to know is to what extent do you attribute Network subscriptions to WrestleMania intake? Because if it's 0 then that's your explanation right there.

I'd like to know how much they profit from a PPV buy compared to a Network subscription. When you think about how much it costs to product new content for it, and maintain the servers etc., it might take 3 or 4 Network subscriptions to make up for losing 1 PPV buy. I wonder what they need to make the dramatic shift from PPV attraction to subscriber base a good business decision. Of course, from what I've read they're doing well financially as of late. Mania might just be the one thing that pretty much everyone in their dedicated fanbase is willing to shell out money for. It would piss people off, but I think taking it off the Network could be a good decision. If they can keep their subscriber base year-round then get everyone buying Mania for PPV prices, they can have their cake and eat it too. However, in reality, their subscriber base would probably drop and so would the PPV buys. But how much?

Vince finally read up on Hollywood Accounting and realized that if Wrestlemania is in the books at a loss, he doesn't have to pay out profit based bonuses? "The Wrestlemania bonus is: you owe me $2,500"

He said in an audio update yesterday that he would not be surprised if Mania is PPV-only next year and not on the Network.
