Wrestlemania 19 had a terrible build-up.
Wrestlemania 26 had probably the best Build-Up since 17.

Maybe WWE needs to stop paying these part-time superstars millions just to wrestle one match. Or, maybe if someone like Bray Wyatt beat one of those guys, people would be more willing to pay to see him wrestle against someone else. Maybe. But people have to like the superstar before fans care about who he's beating.

Good call, I just looked at the card and forgot that Rock was even there. Mania 19 in Seattle did do relatively poorly, I think under 700,000 buys. Attendance seemed good for both shows though, so I'm not sure what the west coast aspect would have to do with it. It did under 600,000, actually. By comparison 17 did over a million, 18 did almost 900,000, and 20 did right around a million. Also, Mania 30 made money where 31 didn't probably because the Network was less successful at the time; Mania 30 had way, way more PPV buys than 31 did. Also, they didn't spend the six months before Mania 30 saying "you'd have to be an idiot to buy this on PPV, $9.99 Maggle!"

The Terminator entrance probably ate up a good chunk of money. I'd imagine Paramount paid WWE for that, actually. Likely, indeed it may be that the concert segments may have been paid for by their record label as well. If anything, it's likely there's more things like that on Wrestlemania to help offset the costs.

He said in an audio update yesterday that he would not be surprised if Mania was cancelled and replaced by the Westminister Dog Show

Also, Mania 30 made money where 31 didn't probably because the Network was less successful at the time; Mania 30 had way, way more PPV buys than 31 did. I'd like to know how much they profit from a PPV buy compared to a Network subscription. When you think about how much it costs to product new content for it, and maintain the servers etc., it might take 3 or 4 Network subscriptions to make up for losing 1 PPV buy. I wonder what they need to make the dramatic shift from PPV attraction to subscriber base a good business decision. Of course, from what I've read they're doing well financially as of late. Mania might just be the one thing that pretty much everyone in their dedicated fanbase is willing to shell out money for. It would piss people off, but I think taking it off the Network could be a good decision. If they can keep their subscriber base year-round then get everyone buying Mania for PPV prices, they can have their cake and eat it too. However, in reality, their subscriber base would probably drop and so would the PPV buys. But how much? One other issue with that - the archives. What do you do for Mania in that case? Just never put it in the archives? Wait like a month? Regardless of what you do there probably will be quite a few people who'll look at it as, "Whatever, I'll just watch it for the next free month, then." Do wonder if maybe they should try tiered pricing, like have you have to pay more to get the PPVs live and to get the PPVs in the archives immediately instead of after a month wait or something. Might pose the same problem or might chase people away, but it might alternatively bring in some extra funds without turning too many people off.

Really even WM 11 that trainwreck made back money but not WM 31 I'm going to go out on a limb and say MILLIONS less went into WrestleMania XI.

It never made sense to have WM be part of the Network. That's the only show that is pretty much guaranteed a huge buyrate even with high PPV costs. They should have sold the Network as getting every PPV except WM, which would still be a good deal if you're a WWE fan given all the other content available.

Unless they actually add some shows on there. Without Mania not really worth it

Not surprised, the build was shit (and antagonizing) And so was the show This is BS, it was a great show and universally praised for what a surprise it was.

I want the reason to be the build that was mostly a big middle finger to fans, but I'm sure it'll come out that it was the arena fee matched by less money from the Network, and then somebody's gonna throw around "entitlement" and bleh.

I think this is one issue with the Network and money, and WWE can't really go back, at least they would get a shit ton of complaints if they did.
I feel that they should have either had 12 pay per views, and maybe 4 would be network exclusive, or you do deals like Elimination Chamber and King of the Ring, and you have all 12 pay per views, but throw in some extras on the Network (though that could run the roster and the whole company itself ragged.
Like, I know pulling out all the stops for big shows is important though and money shouldn't be much of an object. I remember the 2014 Wrestle Kingdom show, Wrestle Kingdom 8, every wrestler got their own absurd entrance, including the Time Splitters coming out in a Delorian. Considering how much money New Japan made that year, it could probably time travel, but all that sounded epic and I wonder if New Japan would have lost money on that event, even though it was quite the bad ass display.

Wrestlemania 19 had a terrible build-up. Wrestlemania 26 had probably the best Build-Up since 17. 17's build-up was a car wreck. Angle was the main event heel in the Rock/Austin angle and almost felt like he should have been in the match. There was the horrible Debra portion of the angle. Taker/HHH was built on Taker saying "hey HHH, you never beat me so why not fight and stuff." Angle/Benoit was completely thrown together. The TLC tag titles was a rematch from Summerslam which was itself a rematch from the prior Mania. It turned out great, but WM19 had a better build sans the awful Booker/H build.

It's 100% the Network. The gate was fine - it was the highest grossing event in wrestling history. But instead of 1 million buys at around $30/each (after cable/satellite cut), they got around 1 million paid network subscribers (maybe less) at around $10/each, minus all the costs that go into the network. Still surprised they lost money with a $12.6/million gate though, I'd love to see that breakdown.

I still don't get the Japanese drummers for Sting. In was a Chinese theme - San Francisco has the largest Chinatown outside of Asia.

Then there's production and travel costs, the Axess event, it adds up. With the Network they're getting a better cut of the total costs, but they're also the means of production, adding extra costs.
