Outstanding performances on film or TV.
Joffrey Rush as Peter Sellers in The Life and Death of Peter Sellers...wow man. Sellers was famous for playing several roles in the same film. Dr.Stragelove, Lolita etc. Rush not only played Sellers straight man comedian under duress, but he'd play a Sellers character or family member as Sellers as a narrator between transitions. Mind blowing stuff man.
Edward Norton in American History X. Watch that back. He plays the same character three different ways and ties them all together (well I suppose editing and story placement does that but he gave the performances). The charismatic racist zealot who has natural leadership ability, the out of place awkward victim in prison, the changed man who sets things to rights. A bonus snippet shows him before all of it happened and how normal he was until the chataclysm of his father's death. Great movie, great role, great performance

The moment the TNG producers realized, "oh yeah we have a critically acclaimed Shakespearean actor, we should probably give him some weighty material".

Going way back, Bela Lugosi as Ygor in Son of Frankenstein. He may be best remembered as Dracula, but this was the finest performance of his career.

Jake Gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler immediately comes to mind. Forest Whitaker in Ghost Dog. He made a role that sounds ridiculous on paper Stephen Dillane as Stannis in Game of Thrones. He IS Stannis. Shoutouts to Jaime and The Hound, too. Cho Min-sik in Oldboy. Cho Min-sik in everything he's in, really. He's one of those dudes who I'll gladly watch anything he's in, he's that fantastic. Song Kang-ho's chilling performance as the father in Mr. Vengeance is another, while I'm on the topic of Korean films. It really stuck out to me. He looks disarmingly average for being in a leading role which his portrayal all the more haunting to me.

John Ritter, Harry Anderson, Annette O'Toole, Richard Thomas and Dennis Christopher sure did. Well, not really sure Dennis Christopher technically did but he was there.

I really like Ol' Nic Cage in Lord of War. Felt like his detached style added way more to it.

Aside from the ones mentioned Daniel Day Lewis in Gangs of New York, the best example of a single performance turning an ok film into a great one.

Rosamund Pike in Gone Girl. Can't believe I forgot Rosamund Pike. I hadn't seen her in anything else, nor did I know anything about what the movie was about. Without delving into spoilers, I'll just say I went from thinking she was a surprisingly bad actress considering the caliber of everyone else in the movie in the beginning to thinking she deserved at least a nod if not an outright win for Best Actress by the end.
