Adam Sandler in Reign over Me. He deserved an Oscar nomination for it, but didn't get one because of who he is.

Joaquin Phoenix and Phillip Seymour Hoffman in The Master are two of my favorite performances ever. The Processing scene in particular actually elicited a "holy shit" when I saw it for the first time.

Rob Sitch in the 'Price Of Fame' episode of Frontline the Australian comedy series.
In it his character Mike Moore host of an early evening commercial a current affairs show decides he has had enough of publicity. So he cuts it off.. But with the combination of not being a center of attention and his best friend at the network started to get some fame.. He completely loses it and has a massive hissy fit in one scene. Wish it was on Youtube. The performance got Sitch several Australian acting award nominations in categories not usually associated with comedies.

Cillian Murphy, in pretty much everything, but specifically 28 Days Later, Peaky Blinders and Sunshine.
Oh, and Chris Evans in Sunshine. I know the money's good but I wish he'd stop doing those Marvel films because his ability as actor is seriously capped doing those Avengers films.

The third act is jarring, but it doesn't make me love it any less.

Leonardo DiCaprio in 'The Wolf of Wall Street'. End of. Only one ever has in the history of film? Didn't even think it was one of his top 2 performances for me, but he was fantastic in it.

I see Leo mentioned for Django and Wolf of Wall Street, but honestly I preferred him in Basketball Diaries and Blood Diamond over those.
Also, I second Sandler in Reign Over Me. A lot better than I thought he could ever do.

Can I add Tom Cruise in 'Magnolia'. For me, he put to bed the perception that he was a 'movie star' and not an actor. He killed it in that role. Having said that, the cast all produced amazing performances in that film.....

Christian Bale in "The Prestige". I feel like Bale gets type cast a lot, but the Prestige definitely allowed him to stretch his wings a bit, though for me, the Fighter was the role where I went, "Normally Bale plays the same dude in every movie, but he f***ing crushed it in the Fighter."

Walken : Deer Hunter , Dead Zone , Biloxi Blues , Comfort of strangers , Nick of Time
Robert Shaw : Jaws
Alberto de Mendoza : Horror Express (even dubbed his performance comes thru)
Joe Spinnell : Maniac
Frank Gorshin : Batman (there's more depth to his performance than meets the eye imo)
Robert Forster : Delta Force
Langella : Masters of Universe
DO Stiers : MASH
