$700 million?! Jeez, whoever gets that is probably going to do what Homer Simpson wanted to do.
I can't really afford the ticket, but I'll probably buy one for the hell of it. Maybe I'll get a few of the numbers to make a couple of bucks.

I was thinking of spending like $100 on tickets, but I need to make student loan payments as well as replace the tires on the car, and all that has to happen like tomorrow. I do get my paycheck tomorrow, but I don't like being low in the bank account, so I dunno.

Hopefully this 20 dollar bill will turn my life around. 1 last shot at living life or sleeping on park benches before my imminent death.

If I win it, I'm going to Little Caesar's and getting TWO $5 Hot-and-Ready Pizzas!

How does this even work? You can get them at gas stations?

Gas stations, convenience stores, and most non-Walmart-type grocery stores.
I feel like you pretty much have the same odds buying one ticket that you do buying 100 tickets. I'll part with $2 or maybe even $4 because that money would probably have gone to buying junk food anyway.

While I'm sure someone will, imagine the craze for ticket buying if no one hits THIS jackpot. We could, should no one hit, be looking at a billion dollar lottery ticket.

I'll look a gift horse in the mouth. If I won, I'd bitch about how bad they f*** you on taxes. I think out of the 700 million, after taxes, you get 422 million or so if you take the lump sum. That's ridiculous.

That's ridiculous. No the lump sum is less not because of taxes but because of how the lottery gets the money. With the annuity its getting the extra money through a bond it buys. Basically with the lump sum they don't buy the bond and you get the money. The taxes would come out of the lump sum 496 mil (800 mil jackpot). The federal tax on that income is 39.6%. The government withholds 25% right off the bat so that's a check of 372 mil with the rest of that (80 mil or so) being paid at tax time. The state gets a taste of the 496 lowest is 3% in NJ to 8.84% in NY for 15 to almost 43 mil to the state. Then if you live in NYC its another cut. \ Still as they say money makes money so going lump sum if you win pays out better in the long run as you can have you money make you money as long as you don't go crazy spending and shit. Because you're waiting 30 years for your money in the case of the annuity and even investing in something conservative like a bond would get you more in 30 years.

Up to 800 million. (Although the real number is 496 million.)

Up to 800 million. (Although the real number is 496 million.) Still...half a billion is half a billion.

When it gets this high, you kind of can't help but purchase a ticket or two. Call it a fever.

This is one of those cases where I'd almost rather not win the jackpot necessarily if I'm going to win something. Moreso because you'd practically be hunted down by the media and I really don't see how, short of pulling a David Bowie and refusing all interviews, you'd be able to stay out of the spotlight.
And that's even before the inevitable relatives-you-didn't-know-you-had and vague acquaintances coming out of the woodwork.

I bought 3 tickets. I dont know how it works. It says that they are for tomorrow. Does that mean someone can win tonight before my tickets even are used?
