After thinking about now for some time, here is my reasoning why I was OK with the handling of Sunset Shimmer's redemption compared to Starlight's...

Sunset actually got punished at the end of the first Equestria Girls and the humane 5 were not immediately buddy-buddy with her but showed some restraint at the end of the movie, too.

That might have helped Starlight a bit better, too. Let her get a little punishment and show the others still being a bit cautious towards her and I bet not many of us would have that much of a problem with it.

A slight counter to that though is the scope of things.

Starlight just wanted to control one area, and make ponies see her way. When that was ruined, she tried to just ruin one mare's life (sure the consequences of that were severe, but still).

Sunset wanted to pretty much conquer two worlds at once, the EqG one and the regular one.

I would say that changing the timelines is still pretty serious even though she wanted to affect one mare only. Just look at some of the timelines she would have cause if Twilight did not interfere with her.

And do you think a tiny army of teenagers would have had a chance at going up against a militarily trained Equestrian Guard?

Considering how often those guards have failed to take threats, and the teens were powered by demon Sunset's magic, and the possibility of her using that magic to keep them with HANDS...yes.

The only times they were bested was by a returning Nightmare Moon, an army of magical, shapeshifting creatures and a magic-sucking demon from the outer lands.

Here we have them going up against a group of hypnotized teens with no combat experience and who would have had to deal with their bodies being transformed to pony bodies (because who says they don't also transform when crossing dimensions?). Yeah, the guard would have taken them out easy peasy while the princesses take care of Demon Sunset.

Alright, after a 2nd watch I've warmed up a little to it.

Didn't help that the stream I used yesterday was a fat steamy pile of wank.

Still not my favourite Season Opener.. That honor still belongs to Season 2.

But it's better than 3 which remains my least favourite.

I'll go with a 7.. Not perfect but better on 2nd watch.
