Rankings and comments, innit?
Name songs:
1. Natalie Prass - "Christy" 2. Kate Nash - "Mariella" 3. Kevin Ayers - "The Lady Rachel"
Kate Nash - "Mariella"
I really like how weird it sounds without getting messy, it gives it a lot of personality. However, unlike the music, I don't think the lyrics are anywhere near as clever or groundbreaking as Nash seems to think they are.
Kevin Ayers - "The Lady Rachel"
It comes close to being good to me but it lack the kind of emotion that a song like that needs to truly work. And while that one has an unusual sound as well, it feels less genuine to me, like it's trying too hard to be whimsical.
Natalie Prass - "Christy"
I usually don't like high-pitched voices but this is one artist who really pulls it off and the melody accompanying it complements it very well.
Year of birth:
1. The Fugees - "Zealots" 2. Juice Newton - "Angel Of The Morning" 3. Gang of Four - "Damaged Goods"
The Fugees - "Zealots"
Not a big fan of the members of Fugees as people but goddamn are they amazing musicians as this song proves yet again. It has excellent rhythm, melody, lyrics and singing. A great example of how breath-taking Hip-Hop can be.
Gang of Four - "Damaged Goods"
Er, don't know if it's just the quality of the recording being bad but I can hardly make out the singing. Either way, while it doesn't sound bad, it does seem like some very generic, neutered Punk. It sound sless like Punk music and more like a popstar trying to be edgy.
Juice Newton - "Angel Of The Morning"
I started out ready to dislike this song as it had the build up of a really asinine glurgy love song but I ended liking it a lot. It's a lot more powerful and has more character than I expected. Good show.
Location
1. Børns - "American Money" 2. Of Montreal - "Wraith Pinned to the Mist and Other Games" 3. The Walkmen - "Louisiana"
Børns - "American Money"
I was almost disappointed this wasn't the "American Money" from Cowboy Bebop. You know how I criticized a lot of songs before for sounding like the kind of stuff I heard all the time as a kid and it felt like radios were just using it as padding? Well, this is a bit like that for modern day... but dammit I like it! I guess modern padding is just better than back in my days, old farts with rose-tinted glasses be damned. It's hard to explain but this kind of sound just works for me.
Of Montreal - "Wraith Pinned to the Mist and Other Games"
I'm surprised this one is over 10 years old because that's another one that feels very modern and I while I think it's good, I don't think it really stands out. It's okay and we need more than "okay".
The Walkmen - "Louisiana"
Heh. It's nice and all but again, it lacks ambition. Plus I feel like the singer doesn't pull off some of the higher notes he's going for.
Jobs
1. Courtney Barnett - "Elevator Operator" 2. Tahiti 80 - "Mr. Davies" 3. Hop Along - "Waitress"
Courtney Barnett - "Elevator Operator"
I like it. It's catchy and fun and, as I keep bringing up, I love songs that have individuality like that.
Hop Along - "Waitress"
I imagine this must be a love it or hate it kind of performance but the singer's voice just isn't for me. The constant switch between screaming and being very soft doesn't work at all and just makes it seem like she can't control her voice. It could have been a good song but this gimmick just kills it for me. I'll give you credit for taking risks, which is what you should do in a game like this, but that's a swing and a miss in this case.
Tahiti 80 - "Mr. Davies"
Nothing special, really. Kind of boring to me. I don't hate it or anything but it feels like the kind of song that would make me switch to a different channel.

We'll have the next round up soon. There was a bit of discussion and some planning, but we decided on the next round and hope the players will enjoy what we have next. Thanks for your patience. Good luck! One round and one sing-off before the Finale...

This is it. One more group of songs until the final sing off before the finale. For this one, the judges decided to indulge a little. (No, not on pillowy mounds of mashed potatoes.) Round 31: Judges Faves You'll be trying to butter up to the judges by choosing songs from their favorite artists. Each judge has chosen 15 artists they like. You must choose one song from one artist on each of the four lists. There are some artists that are already used this season. That's ok, I suppose double dip rules could still apply. But still make sure the actual song has never been used in any FAN Idol season. Anyway, here are the judge's lists (with pseudonyms to make things more fun). Judge Ashley 1) Bush 2) Stone Temple Pilots 3) The Go Gos 4) Hanson 5) New Kids On The Block 6) Billy Joel 7) Skid Row 8) Tony Orlando 9) Kid Rock 10) Live 11) Fuel 12) Everclear 13) Sugar Ray 14) Sloppy Seconds 15) Frankie Vali and The 4 Seasons Judge Carlton 1. Sia 2. Garbage 3. Al Green 4. The Clash 5. Wilco 6. Madness 7. Beastie Boys 8. Sade 9. Devo 10. Elastica 11. James Brown 12. Aaliyah 13. Nina Simone 14. The Beach Boys 15. Lights Judge Hillary Abbath Alestorm Andrew WK Creature Feature Danny Elfman Electric Six GloryHammer Hammerfall Hannah Fury King Diamond Lindsey Stirling Lordi Nightwish Powerglove Powerwolf Judge Nicky Albert King Antonio Carlos Jobim Bauhaus Brian Eno Charlotte Gainsbourg Cowboy Junkies Dinosaur Jr Duke Ellington Galaxie 500 Igor Stravinsky Low Saul Williams Siouxsie and the Banshees The Velvet Underground Wire

Ugh. I might as well drop. Choosing from lists are the worst part of the game for me.
It's ok if you like it. But really takes away from the "choice" aspect. It turns the game into Bingo.
Not to mention, some of these artists have already been used ..: twice.
It's just a way of saying "your taste in music sucks; try this." (Which one judge does every round as is.)
Also, you just told each finalist what to choose for the final round to get over. Most anticlimactic semi-final I've been a part of. Just being honest.

Oh man, Judge #3 is gonna give me a fit. I have a plan for #1 and #2, and there's a song I can't quite remember but know fit the criteria for #4, but #3? Rough sledding.

While I rank the songs, I would like to take the opportunity to explain why I liked the idea of this round (even though I'm not the one who came up with it) and why I was very much behind it.
First of all, while I can see why it could be frustrating to be limited to choices from a list, well, that's actually what I liked about it; I thought it would be interesting to see what the players would be able to come up with while outside their comfort zone. Perhaps they'd end up being pleasantly surprised by a band or artist they didn't know about, perhaps they'd end up having to bite the bullet and choose their favourite work from artists they don't like, perhaps they'd luck out and one of the choices would be something they intended to use anyway.
I also though it would be interesting to see what we judges think of one-another's tastes. While I think we are all open-minded in terms of music here and I don't remember ever being in strong disagreement regarding who deserved to win or lose a round, it also seems obvious to me that we all have different tastes and while we all like similar things, what we love differs a lot. So again, I thought it'd be interesting to see if the players could get us to get out of our own comfort zones and make use appreciate the other judges' tastes more.
And I have to admit there is a bit of self-indulgence. I knew there were some artists I really would like to see show up that have almost no chance of being picked, so I wanted to see which ones would resonate with the players and how much the judges' tastes click with the players'. And who knows? The players could even surprise us with tracks from our favourite artists that we didn't expect or even didn't know!
Can't speak for the other judges but that's my reasoning. Please don't think we're trying to say your tastes are bad or that we know better than you do, I just thought it'd make a nice change of pace to see how the players would deal with unexpected limitations. Admittedly, in retrospect I can understand the argument that this was a poor choice for a semi-final and perhaps if we were going to use such a gimmick, we should have done so earlier.

Funny how this works out, isn't it? It was me and rad first time we played, and now it's me and rad again. Stakes are a bit different this time, though. You'll have my song within a few minutes of this post going up.

I ranked it last just because I thought the other two were stronger but I gotta give a nod to rad for picking Hanson. It was more of a test to see if any of you were ballsy enough to go there or go the safer route. Song would have ranked in my upper half of it was a straight ranking. I'm coming to find that they weren't as bad as I thought they were when I was a kid. Way better that any boy band of that same time

These two players frickin rule! I have stated more than once that I wanted to see them both in the final. I wasn't phoning it in or anything just because I wanted to see them both. I'm hating to see one of them go before the final. Wish they could tie in the singoff about three times in a row and we just said, "You're both in! You broke the singoff, you crazy awesome musical b****rds!"

Funny how this works out, isn't it? It was me and rad first time we played, and now it's me and rad again. Stakes are a bit different this time, though. I guess it's almost fate it's btwn us for a 50/50 shot at the finals here especially because you beat me to the punch on like half a dozen artists this year. Good luck in the singoff quote fw91 Needing 4 1st places to maybe leapfrog Pegasus and Waffel I thought might as well be super risky and that there would be a 10% chance going with Hanson would be a succesful hail mary. That said a couple of their songs have always been a guilty pleasure favorite, if I didn't pick them last round I might never have. So really thanks for including them as otherwise I probably would have gone safe with some STP and it wouldn't have effected the results anyway. quote pegauswarrior Thanks for the huge compliment. It means a lot to hear that as I think you have played Kick A_ _ this season and you have done it while still going with a lot of really great and risky songs. If I go out here I will still be excited to see what you and Waffel bring in the finals.

Good luck in the sing-offs and to the two survivors for the final round. In the meantime, here are my rankings and comments:
Judge Ashley
1. Billy Joel - "Prelude: Angry Young Man" 2. Hanson - "Weird" 3. Frankie Vali and The 4 Seasons - "Walk Like A Man"
Judge Carlton
1. Wilco - "Art Of Almost" 2. Sia - "Dressed In Black" 3. The Beach Boys - "Wouldn't It Be Nice?"
Judge Hillary
1. Powerwolf - "Army of the Night" 2. Alestorm - "Shipwrecked" 3. Lindsey Stirling f. VenTribe and Alisha Popat - "We Found Love"
Judge Nicky
1. Bauhaus - "Bela Lugosi's Dead" 2. Low - "Rope" 3. Antonio Carlos Jobim - "Corcovado"
Billy Joel - "Prelude: Angry Young Man"
Wow, very pleasantly surprised with that one. I was expecting something pretty boring with the way it started but I ended up enjoying it a lot. Very catchy, very fun and an explosion of communicative energy.
Frankie Vali and The 4 Seasons - "Walk Like A Man"
It's good and enjoyable but I feel like it's overly generic to really work for this round. There are countless songs of that time that sound just like this and the short runtime doesn't help as it feels like it's over before it really got going.
Hanson - "Weird"
Damn, someone saw a bluff and called it. I'm not familiar with the Hansons (other than, you know, "Mmmbop" so I honestly can't talk much about their usual quality but honestly, if it's like this, I wouldn't mind hearing more. Don't get me wrong, it does sound very boys-bandish and overproduced but I think they pull it off.
The Beach Boys - "Wouldn't It Be Nice?"
Wow, I've heard that one in so many ads, TV shows and movies that it feels weird actually hearing it on its own. Amusingly, I find it similar to the Hanson pick above in the sense that it does feel very boys-bandish and carefully designed to appeal to the masses but again, you can tell genuine effort was put into it and as a result, it works and is a genuinely good song.
Sia - "Dressed In Black"
This is one of those songs that's really though forme to judge because while I genuinely think it's good, I can't stop thinking of ways it could be better. More range on the voice would have done this wonder and helped it stand out and elevate it above "good".
Wilco - "Art Of Almost"
I kind of wish this was an instrumental as I love the melody. I don't dislike the voice but I think it would need to be more unusual to fit.
Also, man this is a difficult part for me to judge because all three songs have stuff I really like about them and stuff I think could have been done better, but it is different aspects of the songs each time so they end up kind of on an equal level. I guess as a tie breaker, I'll have to rank them based on which ones I would prefer to hear on a loop as background music.
Alestorm - "Shipwrecked"
F*** yeah, Shipwrecked! Alestorm is pure over-the-top Power Metal goodness and this song represents it very well. I still have a small preference for some of their other songs but this is definitely near the podium.
Lindsey Stirling f. VenTribe and Alisha Popat - "We Found Love"
Not a Stirling track I knew about and it seems very different from her usual work but I like it and she once again found an excellent singer to fit her music. Overall I still think she's done better but that' snot to say this isn't a very good song.
Powerwolf - "Army of the Night"
Somehow I never heard of that one and I. Freaking. Love it. I was always impressed by how Powerwolf always manages to go all out while keeping control of what they're doing when so many bands try to do the same thing but end up coming off as trying too hard thinking that loud automatically = good. These guys aren't just crazy and loud, they are insanely talented.
Antonio Carlos Jobim - "Corcovado"
Quite a far cry from the previous part, huh? But you know what? I like that. It's not exactly the most creative of music (it's basically every lounge music ever) but it does a good job of relaxing the listener, which is obviously what it's meant to do. However, I'm not sure that alone is strong enough to make it a solid contender.
Bauhaus - "Bela Lugosi's Dead"
What a weird song and a risky choice. And the risk paid off because I really like this. It's got a unique, strange and very appealing sound. It's hard for me to explain why I like it, I guess it's just a gut feeling kind of thing.
Low - "Rope"
Well, that's a downer, isn't it? It's not the sort of stuff I'd listen to on my own but much like the previous song, I do like it. Unlike other really dark stuff, it's not just depressing, there are genuine emotions behind this music. It feels a bit long but I think it's appropriate considering it obviously is supposed to be drawn out and and give the feeling of someone deeply depressed who has lost all motivation and is dragging their feet through the day.
