Everyone in the church in The Patriot. I loved that movie. That scene always hit me, but I could deal with it. But somehow, a few years later, I watched that scene again ...... and it lost me. Utterly and completely. Haven't watched the movie since. The rest of it is a great film, but.........dear God, that scene.... Also, a bit after that, Rene Auberjonois' character gets it. Never liked that {Spoiler}since it came across as remarkably out of character. I mean, it was his church that was destroyed, but it still seemed odd to me that he'd join up with Ledger's "let's go find 'em and kill 'em" revenge group.

Kirk in Generations. So many better ways for him to go. Right off the top of my head...redo the space battle with a few more Klingon ships. Kirk takes command on the battle bridge amid a radiation leak, pilots it close enough to the surviving Klingon ships and self restricts. Saucer section survives but still crash lands. Kirk dies saving the crew of the Enterprise one last time.

Dina Meyer in starship troopers.
The IMO only actual likeable character of the main cast...could we not have killed that other chick ya know the one that should have died 1000 bug deaths just based on personality alone.

Star Trek in general seems to have a problem with main cast member deaths in general, discounting Spock's death because that was undone. -Kirk's, as you mentioned. -Tasha Yar's being just zapped a certain way by an alien sludge monster, then forgetting about it the rest of the episode until the last scene. -Jadzia Dax just being a one note victim to an enraged Dukat -And don't even get me started on that one death from the Enterprise series finale.

I give TNG a pass on Yar, as she wanted off the show. But before I put Kirk down, I thought about Dax. That was awful. The obvious set up line with no explanation about her not going with them on the Defiant, and the utter randomness of her death...what the hell. Might as well have been a random mugging gone wrong on the Promenade... - Gimme all your money! - Humanity evolved past the need for money- *crackhead stabs her in the stomach a few times and runs off, Dax slowly dies holding her stomach, ignored by everyone*

Wasn't part of Kirk's death on Shatner? Like they had other ways of him dying but Bill redused to do it.

Might as well have been a random mugging gone wrong on the Promenade. Wanting off the show as the reason for the death is fine (heck, the same thing happened with Terry Farrell, who was leaving DS9 and focusing on her role in the show Becker IIRC). But at least make it a better moment. I'll paraphrase something reviewer of Star Trek (started with Voyager but has done more since) SFDebris had for an idea to make Yar's death better, for example: what if Armus' attack was part of a plan by Armus to get off the planet? Play the thing out normally as the ep was at first, but Yar is brought back. But Armus' being infects her, and she becomes an uncontrollable destructive force. It leads to a stand-off between her and Data (harkening back to Naked Now's "fully functional" scene in a way) in a cargo bay, and somehow Yar gets a moment of clarity...realizing the only way to save everyone is her own death. She says goodbye to Data, and depressurizes the cargo bay, killing herself, Data holding her in the vacuum of space, the android unable to feel the pain of this loss, but still diminished by it. In summary...if you're going to kill off a long standing character, make sure it's memorable in a good way.

I guess I don't view the crew as forgetting about Yar until the very end. They were focused on saving the crew in the shuttle, and grieving later. And the show wasn't even a full season at that point, Yar could hardly be considered long standing. Now what are everyone's thoughts on the death of Data? That Trek death hasn't been brought up.

Data's death was...odd. I get they were trying for their own Spock's sacrifice since they had this odd idea that Nemesis would be their Wrath of Khan (which...wasn't that what First Contact's job was?). But I will go by the continuity of the Trek 09 prequel comic and say that Data's consciousness went into B4, changed them, and Data eventually became captain of the Enterprise-E.

It's just too bad they gave it to Stuart Baird, notable for...for... To be fair, Stuart Baird's body of work as an editor is excellent, including The Omen, Superman, Lethal Weapon 1 and 2, Die Hard 2, Gorillas in the Mist, Casino Royale, and Skyfall. Even his other two directing credits (Executive Decision and US Marshals) are solid enough movies. The problem with Nemesis was he genuinely didn't give a shit about Star Trek, and, if stories from the cast are to be believed, even despised it. Baird himself admitted to hating the fact that he was working with established characters and continuity.

Han in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift/Fast and Furious 6. I was okay with his, since his death kinda served a purpose in Tokyo Drift. Killing off Gisele really stunk of "Well, she wasn't around for Tokyo, so let's just kill her to explain why."

I was really bummed out when Malone was killed in The Untouchables. I remember being really happy when Ness threw Frank Nitti off the roof, even though it was completely out of character.

On the subject of Fast & Furious, I will go with Vince in Fast Five. He was the one character who hadn't made an appearance in a few films and the only one of Dom's old crew from the first film to return only to be killed off. It was an emotional end, yes, but he was the only one from the original crew to return.
Also, Jesse in the first film. From what I have read, in Rob Cohen's original script of the second film, he was supposed to have survived, but obviously that didn't happen.
